I'm not sure about the economic argument. Imagine the cost
of building underground on the moon! I imagine that the existing
design could have been built on Earth then simply bolted together
on the Moon's surface. Whereas to build underground, the
building workers would have to wear spacesuits to work and be
supplied with oxygen. I appreciate that the interceptor hangars
are built underground, but I don't think that would have happened
in 'real life'. As we've discussed before there doesn't seem to
be a practical way for the astronaut to get into the interceptor
unless the hangar is pressurised, in which case millions of
litres of air would be lost every time an interceptor is
launched.
