Are the commentary tracks from the various released
UFO discs available for downloading anywhere? I bought the first DVD release of the series from England which has Ed Bishop on one episode and Gerry Anderson on another, but missed out on Wanda Ventham and Sylvia Anderson on the US (I think) discs. Thanks, Kevin. |

The US discs have a Wanda Ventham/Sylvia Anderson commentary for TIMELASH, plus a Mike Billington/Alan Perry commentary for KILL STRAKER. Ther are short excerpts on my "Videos" page, but that's all I know about: http://ufoseries.com/videos Generally, I wait until things have been out of print for a while before I even consider putting something online in its entirety. And the US discs are still in print, as far as I know. Marc |

There is also a commentary track for the KILL STRAKER! episode, featuring Alan Perry and Michael Billington (on the U.S. version). Is this one on the British releases?

Afraid not. The only commentaries we got in the UK were Gerry Anderson on Identified, and Ed Bishop on SubSmash. It is annoying when different countries have different commentary tracks on the same series; you feel a bit left out!

That'll teach me to look at all my messages first before replying. I seem to have inadvertently duplicated some info that was mentioned earlier.

I did the same thing. Sometimes it is just easier to reply as you read them, rather than backtracking afterwards. Traffic on this group is light enough that I don't think it's too major an offense. Of course, opinions may differ.

Thanks,Marc, Jeff and Mick.
I will be having a listen at Marc's site, and I agree that it is a bit unfair that we would have to purchase the UFO sets from all regions to get all the extras available. Maybe a special CD or DVD with all the UFO extras ever offered would be the way to go, then nobody would miss out. Regards, Kevin. |

The problem with that is that A&E Video payed for the creation of the KILL STRAKER and TIMELASH commentary, so they are not likely to let anyone else have them unless they pay for them. (also, those commentaries were recorded after the British DVD's had already been released) And as Rob says, the upcoming Australian UFO DVD set (if it ever actually comes out) will have yet another exclusive commentary -- George Sewell for ESP, I believe... Kevin,
Email me. Might be able to help you out. Tried to email you, but my message was bounced back for some reason. Jeff croprobz <[hidden email]> wrote: Thanks,Marc, Jeff and Mick. Sorry about the email problem, I may have set my Yahoo email preferences incorrectly. I'm not too sure how to go about emailing anyone on this list. Umbrella Entertainment is supposed to be the distributors for the Australian discs, and as Marc has pointed out, they have been due out "next year" for about the last 3 years. Am I glad I got my discs from UK instead of waiting forever. I am also waiting for 500GB hard disc recorders to come out so I can put my entire DVD collection including UFO on it. I was taking one of my UFO discs out of the computer drive a while back, and the disc got caught on one of the tray tabs, then fell to the floor (shock horror) Puting the discs on the hard drive to watch them should avoid such handling accidents. In the meantime I am tossing up whether to get the Aussie discs or not. Maybe as back-up in case of even worse accidents. Regards, Kevin. |

The problem with the Australian Umbrella release of UFO is that it has been *too* long in coming! Each time they've pushed the date back for no apparent reason but still with news that the release would include more extras every time the new dates were posted. As some of you may have read from my posts on other forums about their recent Anderson releases, Umbrella had promoted a whole heap of unique extras for their releases of Supercar, Fireball XL5 and The Secret Service, nearly all which never eventuated!! All 3 of these boxed sets were released as "bare bones" as one could get, in cheap quality boxes and with non-professional menu stylings. I fear their UFO release would fare no better..... They promised lots of extras on their Supermarionation titles, including commentaries, featurettes and documentaries, promos....the works! In the end all they delivered were essentially photo galleries!! (Except for The Secret Service which did include textless titles footage for all 13 episodes, an amazing extra worth the price of the box alone. Just my opinion, and probably not the cup of tea of the average fan, but doing the same for UFO would be a great extra nonetheless if indeed the footage still exists in its raw state). Each set did include a "TV spot" but imagine my disappointment when I discovered that this was merely the contemporary generic ITC Video promo that accompanied the VHS video releases of the 1990s, transferred from VHS itself without any cover-up work, cut up into 3 bits and merely added to each specific set. Pathetic. To be honest I'm hoping that Umbrella won't release their UFO set because based on their current track record it won't hold a candle to the other releases already available. Which does beg the question: Whatever happened to Umbrella? A few years ago they used to be one of the "benchmark" companies, and now they're sadly bringing up the rear... Just my opinion of course. I just got a reply from Grant Taylor about the Australian UFO DVD release: ---- UFO has been a project I have had on the burner for over 2 years now. Umbrella (the company who I am producing it for) have kept delaying it in their schedules as they are preferring to concentrate on Minder and The Sweeney releases (which I am also producing for them). UFO was due for release this November, however, once again they pushed it back until 2007. It's very frustrating as I'm about 75% finished on the UFO project, but can't move to design and authoring stage (which I do here at Madman) until they want to schedule it. Hopefully it will see the light of day in the first 6 months of 2007 (if it doesn't Umbrella's rights to the series are likely to expire before too long!!) ---- This doesn't answer the question about what happened to Umbrella, but it does bring us up to date on their UFO release! Note that one thing I've learned is that the Umbrella UFO DVDs will NOT include any music & effects tracks, which is one of the extras that was originally mentioned. Apparently Umbrella has backed off from this feature on all of their Granada titles (not just UFO), due to some contractual reason. Also, it sounds like their UFO DVD release may have already been scaled back in other ways. The reason for this is due to Umbrella, and them scaling back the budget for the release. The person who is creating the UFO DVDs would be happy to make this the biggest, most impressive UFO DVD release ever, but it's not going to happen if Umbrella is no longer willing to pay for it.
