Hello,
New here, I'm Karl. 54. Theatre tech and musician. Loved the show in the day, my fav as a kid. Had the serious crush on Lt Ellis many of us probably suffered through. Recently banged through the DVD set (4 days) after having not seen the show for 40+ years... and was totally reminded of why it was my fav. It stands the test of time. Even to a guy who works in theatre, film, and media. I'd never seen it in color though, and had no idea the moonbase wigs were purple. Very delightful. As a media person in my adult life I often view things from a production standpoint. Props, sets, lighting, camera angles and POV's, continuity. On first view through I only caught two continuity errors. There are probably more but I wanted to try and enjoy it, not pick it apart as a jaded adult. The experience was a delightful emotional and sensory time machine. Calm warm fuzzies. But... I did want to mention a couple of things that have probably already been mentioned by ardent fans or observant viewers. Item one I thought cute (maybe even a bit of humour by the set dressers or scenic designers). In Hendersons office in the Astrophysics building. Notice the toy on the shelf with the red arrow pointing at it ? (I added the arrow) Its a Mattel Major Matt Mason space toy repainted silver, minus the astronaut figure... which would have been a dead give away. ![]() ![]() The second bit of fun I noticed... George Lucas used a video editing switcher as the main control panel of the Death Star. Turns out Gerry (of course) did that first. Nice to know the Ampex VR-1000 gets put to good use in the future for recording telemetry. Looks pretty good with a coat of red paint on the front panel. This is supposed to be Mission Control at NASA, but based on the number of VTR and video switchers in the room I am suspecting they re-dressed the video editing suite at Pinewood for the scene. Hey... a budget is a budget and ya gotta cut corners when you can. ![]() These are not knocks, they are salutes... in theatre or film we do what we can with what we have to work with. I'm wondering what other wonderful stuff those of you who have been here for awhile may have noticed. I'm looking forward to reading and learning, hopefully sharing. I sense I am in good company. |
Hi Karl,
Congrats on joining the group! I'm assuming that you had photos attached to your message. To the best of my knowledge, they aren't allowed for some reason (but there IS a files section). Interesting observation about the MMM toy in Henderson's office! As MMM was my favorite toy as a child, and I had about 90% of the MMM items released in the line in my collection until a few years ago, I'm dying to know if you recall which episode(s) of UFO it appeared in. :) Jeff -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 9/30/14, guitarorama [via SHADO] <[hidden email]> wrote: Subject: [SHADO] Sets and Props To: "SHADO" <[hidden email]> Date: Tuesday, September 30, 2014, 3:20 AM Hello, New here, I'm Karl. 54. Correction - back when this group was on YahooGroups, photos or attachments were not allowed. However, right now you CAN send photos and attachments. As an example of that, think of the SHADO jeep restoration photos we've been seeing here. Marc |
Oh yeah. Duh. My bad. I'm used to seeing photos on two of the Facebook UFO pages, and had forgotten we have been seeing them here (as traffic is so light lately), too.
Thanks, Marc! :) Jeff -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 9/30/14, Marc Martin [via SHADO] <[hidden email]> wrote: Subject: [SHADO] Re: Sets and Props To: "SHADO" <[hidden email]> Date: Tuesday, September 30, 2014, 6:11 PM On September 30, "SHADO [via SHADO]" <[hidden email]> wrote: > I'm assuming that you had photos attached to your message. FWIW, I can see the photos here, but still don't get them in the emails.

Yes, there does seem to be some incompatibility somewhere, between certain email applications (or web browsers) that makes the photos not visible unless you view them on the shado-forum website. It's not a universal problem, however. And I haven't investigated what's going on there... Marc |

Welcome, Karl.
Some very sharp observations on your part. The Major Matt Mason item was a little ahead of my time, so I never recognized it. But did you also notice the Hasbro GIJoe Mercury Space Capsule that also resided on General Henderson's shelf? JEK |
I noticed a Gemini capsule of some sort painted silver on one of his shelves in "Court Martial". Which episode did you see GI Joe's Mercury capsule (I wanna see it, too)?

Sounds like you already found it - the Hasbro GIJoe Mercury Space Capsule was molded in a medium or dark sliver plastic. On one side was a clear canopy that could be slid back to easily install or remove the action figure. But on the opposite side was printed "United States" in large navy blue lettering.
