Maybe Straker picked it up, together with a load of other colloquialisms
whilst in and around England, London and the Harlington-Straker film studios, which would have to use all the 'current' in words and phrases in their scripts... :) -----Original Message----- From: James Gibbon [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 1:45 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: Sky 1 or Interceptor? Straker - "I should be so lucky." episode escapes me, but thought it cool at the time... Dave H |

In this context the pilot has an accident, which is so devastating that the farm he crashes into is completely destroyed, thus causing him to have to "buy the farm".... Naturally the crash kills the pilot. Maybe a stretch, but it came from an old flight instructor.... Dave H |

The phrase "Bought the farm" come from the World War Two. The reason was
that the money from the military insurance of the person killed was usually enought to buy the land the family was living on by paying off the mortgage(which by the way means death pledge) which for so many was a farm. So saying "He bought the farm" meant he died. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I must admit I as always rather surprised at how accepting both Straker and
Henderson were on discovering that the Project Discovery mission was a failure and that a billion dollars had gone down the drain... ...on the other hand (at risk of resurrecting an old subject;) I have never believed that the images from the B142 were worthless... I've always had suspicions that Kelly may have rigged the B142 in order to raise interests in his pet projects... I've also wondered at the short-sightedness of the fact that the B142 was only using visible spectrum scanning (as opposed to infra-red, spectrometers, radars altimeters etc etc)... why they had to install a camera in the B142 when there was already one in orbit in a B142 that took the test pictures in the first place... how did that one get launched... maybe Straker has been saving the pennies from his non-drinking... mmm... lots of niggling things that bug me in that episode... still like it though... especially the Straker/Ellis/Foster scene... Paul Fosters expression is priceless as he halts when entering the sphere... Best to all, Griff That's all from me for a few weeks... away on assignment until late July... I'd hate to be an Interceptor pilot that dented his craft, and have Straker tell him that....;-D Amelia [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Your use of Yahoo! <<I've always had
suspicions that Kelly may have rigged the B142 in order to raise interests in his pet projects..>> Suspicions? I have ALWAYS felt that was the case! He sabotaged it to make a point (even though Straker didn't catch on at the time.). Maybe later they found out and docked Kelly's pay for the billion. ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com |
