Some additional comments re Sub-Smash

Bill Cotter
To follow up on a few things others have mentioned since I made my
first post on the episode.

Yes, they were running out of power and air, so turning off the
monitors would have been a good idea, as well as extra lights, etc.
Of course that would be a pretty dull episode listening to the
actors sitting in the dark!

Every sub I have been on has had the capacity to flood the entire
thing (actaully the compartments with hatches) so the crew can make
a mass escape. I didn't pick on that one as it would have pretty
much made the episode rather short!

I didn't realize Chin became Caucasian - guess I was hitting my head
on the desk having seen something else. Thanks for pointing it out
and I'll check it when I listen to Ed's commentary.

Another thing I disliked about the show - the alien device blasted
the sub, then instead of shooting it again and destroying it, it
sailed right past and went airborne where Sky-1 could destroy it? It
would have been so easy to script it that the aliens were coming
back for the kill, so Sky-1 was launched and chased them to the
blast scene.

I guess it's that last sort of thing that bothers me the most. I
realize the monitors were left on because the flickering screens
emphasized the helplessness of the situation, and that 99% of the
people in the world have never been trained in Submarine Evacuation
101 class. It's just that it's so easy to fix many of these
things. "Gee, commander, the main hatch is jammed so we can't all
get out at once, guess we'll have to use the emergency escape
hatch." I hate shoddy writing or extremely obvious plot devices
(like a show where a main character mentions his best friend in the
whole world, the closest he has ever been to anyone, who just
happens to guest star that week and then is never mentioned again.
You just know the person is in for a world of hurt!!)

Hey, some quick observations on "Sounds of Silence" as well:

1) If I was looking for my missing brother, I would have been a lot
more upset and worried than that woman was.
2) Notice how muck thicker the core sample they took out of the
alien capsule was than the drill they supposedly used to make it? Or
how nicely machined the sample was?
3) My biggest beef, though, was Foster going back to the farm at the
end. What does this guy do, chase every woman who has had the
amnesia drug, as in Dalotek Affair, so he can use his previous
experience with them to seduce them? Sort of like the
movie "Groundhog Day"? Come on, what did they need to put that bit
in at all for?
4) Oh, before I forget - would you take an unknown alien device back
to headquarters instead of opening it someplace where something like
an atomic explosion would be less of an inconvenience?

Hi Bill,

I'm going to be out of town on vacation from Friday to Monday. Might
you be able to look after the SHADO list while I'm gone?

Well, with all of this attention, what can I say but yes, I will
assume the Responsibility Seat.

Wow! The power! What a weekend it will be.
