Straker's car

Samantha Peterson

TV Land is running a poll for TV's top ten cars. Straker's car did NOT make the list! I urge everyone to get over to TVLand.com and write it in! Hurry...the show airs this Wednesday night!

Nice idea, but probably pointless (even though I did a write-in). 26 cars listed, instructed to vote for ten of the 26. The chances of Straker's car winning on a write-in basis are virtually zilch... : (

Ahhhh....but here's the rub....there is no limit to how many times
you can vote! So vote and vote often! ;-)

Re: Straker's car

I saw that you can vote as many times as you want. In fact, I voted at least 20 times. I don't mean to come accross as a pessimist as much as a realist, but how many thousands of write ins would be required to get Straker's car on the show for 30 seconds? And there's no guarantee they would include it anyway (might be too hard to get permission to use footage on such short notice). They are going to want to show vehicles that a large percentage of the population are familiar with. How many folks do you figure are familiar with the Strakermobile? If you have the time to waste voting thousands of times, feel free. I have more important things to waste my time on (like watching UFO DVDs). But if you have some automated way to cast thousands of votes, please let me know! : )

It is fun to vote and try -- but since the show airs this Wed, it's more than
likely it's already "in the can" and nothing is going to change the Top 10.
They tend to show stuff from thier library of TV Shows anyway.....like they
did with Top Ten Dads (IIRC).

I'd be surprised if a non-TV Land/Nick at Nite show won a top 10 slot.

Re: Straker's car

Thanks for the suggestion! But I still have to hit "paste" to enter my selection in the box everytime I hit the back button after voting. Just got back from voting at least an additional 50 times. I can't believe I'm doing this (my friends would tell me to get a life). I still don't think it's gonna do any good. Their system may actually throw out multiple votes from the same person. Their system may throw out ALL write-ins for all we know.
Reminds me of when I used to be a mechanic at a used car lot. Any potential customer that came in was allowed to enter a drawing for a year's worth of free oil changes, with a drawing taking place once a month. When I once mentioned that I had never done a free oil change on anyone's car, my boss told me that they just dumped out the fishbowl containing the entries once a month. There actually never was a winner. As a result of this, I believe a write-in has about as much of a chance of winning as I believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny...

If you dont work at that used car lot you should report them for fraud. I voted for the Straker car but I doubt that even if 500 people voted for it would win. Most of the cars i noticed were from shows that are shown on Nick. Space 1999 moonbuggy surprised me because it was not that popular even when the show was. bsl

I would guess that a show like that would feature the more famous cars such as the Batmobile as driven in the 1966 TV Batman, or Green Hornet's Black Beauty, or Knight Rider's jalopy - cars with gimmicks. Straker's car was mainly a basic-function travel machine. The only gimmicks I can recall are the gull-wing doors, a car-phone and a security camera.

These so-called polls are often rigged, and therefore mean nothing. People are given a limited list and told to choose from it. If the person putting the list together hates a particular person or object they omit it, thus we are not being given a free choice. Although they will brag that it is a free choice, it is not! In the UK this happens a lot especially on the trashier channels such as Channel 5 and Channel 4. They often put out garbage shows of 100 Best Whatever, and the resulting shows make you wonder where the so-called polls were held. I wouldn't get too bothered about these garbage polls, they're justa waste of time and worthless!

The other gimmick was the automatic distress signal which would send a signal to HQ.

SOMEBODY'S got their wires crossed. The show was supposedly airing
last night. But the website is still accepting votes (I added a few
more, not that it matters).

Oops!! You're absolutely right - the effects of the SHADO Amnesia Drug haven't completely worn off, it would seem. Now, what were we discussing, I can't seem to recall...

Seriously, though, I've just had an idea. During the series, the Amnesia Drug is mentioned a few times, and it's therefore reasonable to assume that it is constantly used. It is human-made and therefore fallible. What would happen if it started to wear off? If people started to remember things? What if some people were resistant to it?

Off Topic question...

When posting messages to this group, in the "From:" line, I come up as "nafofu"(see below). Anybody know what the heck a "nafofu " is, or have an idea how I became one? I'm perplexed.

It's backwards for ufofan, which I think we all are.

I first watched UFO in 1972 and fell in love with Straker.
I searched out every program and movie that Ed Bishop
was in (I wish imdb.com had been around then), including
"What Katy Did" on PBS.

Re: Off Topic question...

SHADO

Thanks, Evelyn. Am I ever the bonehead! I think I'm going senile. Now that I think about it, I recall being asked to enter a user name when I signed up for this group. I tried "ufofan", and it was taken. So I think I tried "ufofan1", "ufofan2", etc., up to about "ufofan47". All were taken. So in frustration, I typed in "ufofan" backwards. And apparently promptly forgot that I did so (shades of the movie MEMENTO). Kinda scary. I wonder if I would've ever remembered if you hadn't "decrypted" it !?! Excuse me while I stare blankly into space and drool on myself...(egads)

I too was drawn to Ed Bishop's Straker character back in 1972, and for some unknown reason, he is still my favorite in the show. Although I don't recall seeing Ed Bishop in anything else except "Journey to the far side of the sun" (aka "Doppelganger", right?). I should probably spend some time researching his other roles...
