Strakers Clausterphobia

James Campbell
I am sure that others have brought this up but if Straker was clausterphobic how according to his bio could he have been a fighter pilot and a moon astronaut best to my knowldge that can get a pilot scrubed not to mention a astronaut so I thought it was strange they would give him that phobia. I liked the Capt of Sky one give him some bucket boots a frilly shirt and a cutlass and he could take on Jack Sparrow lol I think they need StingRay inthis episode of Sub Smash

Possibly but it was never mentioned I was not aware that the sonar Lt. was a moonbase team member so it would seem they get rotated around the organization she looked different without purple hair lol

I'd say it depends. He didn't show any claustrophobic reactions in space, only while underwater. So either this was never tested for, or as Jim said he acquired it later in life.

Hi. Straker's claustrophobia is called 'a morbid dread of confined spaces' (I think those are the exact words!).  In The Man Who Came Back, we see Straker and Collins inside a space capsule and it certainly seems larger than an Apollo command capsule, so perhaps it was not considered that 'confined', and in an aircraft you can see outside, which makes a huge difference.

It's the fear of being trapped and unable to get out that is the real 'phobia' for some people. Claustrophobics don't panic when they go to the toilet, but if the door jams,  then ... !!

As for rotation of staff, yes, we see Ayshea in Moonbase as well as Control, Waterman as an Interceptor pilot and also as a Skydiver Captain, Lake in charge of Moonbase and  Skydiver, etc. Bishop himself mentioned that the jobs were 'fluid'. It also explains the discrepancies with certain members of the cast not appearing in some episodes, especialy after the break when several left the series.

Re: Straker's Claustrophobia

James Killian
I can't remember the exact episode but one had a flashback showing Straker in a
space capsule and sweating from his claustrophobia.  It might have been a
training device and from the size it seemed like Mercury program capsule and
they were very small.  It might have been this is when the problem showed up and
as they were very publicity oriented about the space program it could be they
let Straker transfer to Air Force Intelligence saying he felt his talents could
be better used there as he had not been picked to be one of the chosen feel of
the space program to go up on the Gemini or Apollo missions.  Note of the
original astronauts of whom there were 7 only six actually went into space.  The
seventh man was Deke Slayton who was grounded for medical resons which was said
to be a iratic heart beat which oddly never showed up during his tests as a
test pilot or the selection program that got him into the astronaut program to
start with.  Perhaps he too had claustrophobia and they did not want to say.  He
did however get to go into space for the last Apollo mission with which docked
with the Russian Soyuz.

James K.

Hmmm, I don't recall anything like that in UFO... perhaps you're
thinking of something else (or someone else) ?

Re: Straker's Claustrophobia

SHADO
There is no flashback of Straker in a space capsule in the Sub-Smash episode.
