THE DALOTEK AFFAIR

Christian J.
Hi All!

OK, Mr Nitty-Picky is back again ;-) My view of this affair:

THE DALOTEK AFFAIR is one of these so-so episodes. There are some
entertaining parts (like the flirting of Foster) and some
disappointing ideas (like Strakers search for a simple word). In
Germany in was broadcast under the title MONDBASIS, BITTE MELDEN!
(Moonbase, please answer).

* In this episode we can see Ford as an Interviewer in 1969.

* We can see the three UFOs flying close to each other - like always
- but this time they were located on three different positions (and
not on only one), namely:

RED 0135-242
CONFIRM CONT.2 0140-242
CONFIRM CONT.3 0145-242

SHADO's hardware improves :-)

* Everytime the three UFOs pass the camera, the light spot (which
becomes later the meteorite) appears.

* Interesting: this time when the Red Alert is given, the
Interceptors have to be on an "immediate standby" and only after the
conversation with Straker Foster gave the order for an "immediate
launch". Entirely new methods here! :-)

* Again SHADO knows the exact target aera (60 miles from Moonbase)
when the UFOs are far away in space and are able to alter course at
any time (which they did, BTW).

* Straker is angry about the fact that Foster has to GUESS why the
UFOs returned home, although he works with an expensive equipment.
Sorry, but that's a too naive point of view from an intelligent
Commander like Straker is. IMO. After all Foster is no clairvoyant :-)

* Now watch this scene: Straker talks in his office to Freeman about
the Dalotek station and it seems that the actor Bishop had a little
difficulty with his text. After "I told Foster to keep..." is a short
pause before he continues with "...Moonbase on Green Alert for the
next few days." When Sewell replied "Hey! Maybe they were after the
Dalotek installations." he (Sewell) suddenly starts to grin like
he's having a ball.
OK, maybe I am wrong but it seems to me that this kind of action
was not intended. I wonder if Mr Bishop or Mr Freeman would remember
the scene and were able to give us the solution? But after all this
long time, I doubt it. Hm... maybe I only fancy this.... But watch
Sewells big grin!

* Straker IS a typical military man. He shows it by being not at all
in fond of private installations like Dalotek is. And in treating
there members in a rather negative way.

* And unpolite is Straker (sometimes) too: after the monitor
conversation with the head of Dalotek he just switched off the screen
straight in the conversation without having any words of goodbye. (Or
is this a common matter in the english speaking countries?) 8-

* Hey! A rather thick cable of 50 km length (or was it just 15 km?)
fits into the Moonmobile? Is this possible? Anyone?

* I like the facial expressions of Harrington when she listens to the
flirting Foster 8-)) Great!

* I am also not satisfied with the stupid pilots of the Moonshuttle
who are switching back to manual so very late - strictly speaking
when it's too late.

* See what I mean? One UFO attacks: Interceptors immediate launch.
Three UFOs attack: Interceptors only on standby :-)
(BTW, why aren`t the Aliens attack with the three UFOs again?
Wouldn't this be more effective? OK, I am a nitty-picky-picker...
:-)

* Hm. The subplot with Straker who tries to remember a single word
(Fireball) which gives him the solution to the current crises is - to
say the least - ridiculous! Especially when he couldn't do a
thing with this knowledge, because he couldn't inform Moonbase
anyway.

* After the Dalotek station is hit, the papers are circleing around
instead of flying out through the hole.

* When the Alien device is destroyed, the interferences fade slowly
away instead of immediately.

* These guy Foster has guts :-) In the restaurant he starts flirting
with Jane Carson at the table, although Miss Carson came with a man!
I hope it is only her brother :-))

Hope there was something of interest for you! :-)

Yeah, what's the point of that, I wonder?

I don't know, but they drop the end while they are still a good thirty
yards away. Maybe they ran out and had to go back for more?

I agree. Dumb. He should have ditched computer control as soon as it
turned to garbage. If I were commander and they had lived, I would
have jerked that pilot's licence as soon as I'd heard the flight
recorder.

Totally superfluous. My take was that they were trying to fill in time
in order to pad out the episode to 50 minutes.

Actually if you look at the guy with her, you see that the man is in
fact Tanner, the leader of the Dalotek lunar survey team. Foster makes
note of this at the beginning of the episode when he says "Out with
the boss, eh?"

Of course there's nothing to say that Carson and Tanner *didn't* have
something going on... :-)

They added the interview at the beginning and the whole "Fireball"
subplot because they had Dr. Frank Stranges visiting the set, and
they wanted to take advantage of that and insert him into an episode.
If you look at the original script for THE DALOTEK AFFAIR on my
website, you will see that there is no interview from 1969, no UFO
expert, and no review of any interview looking for the word
"Fireball"...

Heh heh heh...

Well...
What's to stop a bloodyminded guy from trying anyway? It was bothering him,
and, ya know.... He can't have that! :-)
The knowledge could have had some relevance someday, who knows....
;-)

He lived to be in the next ep, non? <giggle>

Always is!
