Thunderbirds

anthonyappleyard <MCLSSAA2@fs2.mt.umist.ac.uk>
On Sunday 10 Sept 3000 the BBC ran the Thunderbirds episode about Sidewinder
falling in the pit (Pit of Peril?).
What does "F.A.B." stand for? It is said in the story as a reply to radio
messages and seems to mean "Understood" or similar.
Part of the episode was live-action (the early bits that showed African
wildlife).
It was quite exciting.
I think that Sidewinder would have been more stable on the move with 6 legs
rather than 4.

I watched it too, one: because my computer was in the shop (again!) and I
didn't feel like doing the housework and two, because I thought it was time
to watch a Thunderbirds episode.

I wondered about that too. Thanks for explaining, Grant

Quite. They should have studied insects :-)
On the whole, I liked the various flying machines, even if some of them
wobbled too much. Couldn't they keep them a bit steadier? (How many strings
were used for them things? And for the puppets?)
I wasn't impressed by the machine they called the 'mole' though. It
burrowed (downwards) through the earth by means of a huge screw-type thing
in front, then afterwards it went back - only there was no screw at the
back, the back was flat. The screw-type thing reversed its movement, but
surely that couldn't push the machine back up? It would have screwed
against air rather than dirt or whatever solid stuff it was screwing when
going into the earth. I hope you all know which meaning of screwing I'm
talking about - sorry, couldn't think of another word.

Can't say I like puppets anywhere near as much as live humans so I doubt
I'll watch a Thunderbirds ep again. The best parts were hearing bits and
pieces of music that one hears on UFO as well.
Just a question (sorry if this is a bit OT) - are those 'International
Rescuers' all family? Sounded like it.

I noticed Sylvia Anderson was listed on the 'voice cast' (if that's a valid
term?)
So was Shane Rimmer.

At the end of the programme the BBC announcer said something about some
interview or other with Gerry Anderson being in the archives of their
website in audio format. I didn't take note of the URL, it's bound to
require that stupid Real Player 7 (unless it is now not a Beta version any
more and has outlived its stupidness?)

Superb concept - using the web for radio archives. Like "20-20 vision",
the best ideas are obvious. Nice one, Aunty :) :) :)

Well I'm sure all the Thunderbird craft are impractical designs
really just like the various vehicles in UFO, as we've discussed
occasionally - but when the mole comes back out of the ground, I
suppose it's just like unscrewing a wood screw from wood - in
theory it would (sort of) work except that the earth would
probably be too soft to support it on the way out. TB2 is the
design I have the most trouble with, the wings look a wee bit too
small to provide lift for all that bulk!

Oh I'm sorry to hear that! It's definitely a different kind of
series from UFO but it's nonetheless classic stuff (imho of course)!!
I recommend Day of Disaster or Sun Probe.

Yes, with the exception of Brains, Tin-Tin and Cyrano, it's
Jeff Tracy and sons, all named after famous astronauts from
the early days of space travel.

Probably not - all of the BBC real audio I've tried has just
required the basic free real audio player.

BTW - if FAB1 and TB1 are still on display at Virgin on Saturday,
I'll take some pics and put them up on photopoint or similar.

I think that the mole has some side caterpillar tracks as well to help its movement back and
forth in the ground. I still like the Thunderbirds and yes the designs are impractical at time but
one should remember that Tbirds is a fantasy show so reality is second fiddle to story. The
one advantage Tbirds has over UFO is that the miniatures don't look so out of place with
puppets than with live-action. Gerry's mixing of live action and models improved in
Space:1999 and Space Precinct. All said, UFO has the best premise screaming to be
remade but a live action Captain Scarlet has promise as well.

I haven't seen a Thunderbirds episode in almost 30 years. But this
will be remedied when the US DVDs arrive. TB2 was my favorite. I
remember it as a very versatile and futuristic craft.

I'm sure you're right, but being a kid's show, it's not really
fair to hold TB to any serious scrutiny. UFO is different being an
adult series.

There's a Thunderbirds "Cross sections" book available at Fanderson.
Looks interesting. It would be nice if they did one for UFO.

My husband Graham Bleathman did the Thunderbirds book, so he would be glad
to do a UFO book. However there aren't enough vehicles in UFO to support
such a project commercially.

Sorry!

A live action Captain Scarlet would have a lot of possibilities. Much better
project than what is currently popping up on Sci-Fi channel. I am curious to
see how they handle Dune. UFO and Captain Scarlet were my favourites growing
up and still are.

I loved Thunderbirds at the time and still do, and my children (I'm English,
they are American) love it too. I loved Space:1999 growing up, I am not as
keen on it now, much the same way as the Irwin Allen stuff.

I just found out that they are doing a CGI version of Captain Scarlet. Not live action but
close. the test clip I saw was very good. It is just an animatic ( a test film so that the
animators/special effects crews have an idea of what that scene should look like - a moving
storyboard) but it looks like that they could produce a great show which looks similar in style
to the Roughneck Starship Troopers series.

My daughter (8 yrs) was getting really worried over Thunderbirds this
weekend. It was the one with the burning skyscraper. I asked her why she was
getting so excited and she said that if the fire burns through Scott's
strings he won't be able to move anymore, and he'll be trapped.
Kids these days! I hardly even noticed the strings in my day!

Actually, it's much more than an animatic. It's a real short test
film, fully animated, fully scripted, with music, effects etc. It's a
mini-episode and it looks fantastic!

As always, we hope to show something really rare/unusual/special at
our conventions, so visitors to Century 21 just might get a chance to
see it for themselves (if everything works out OK).....

Did they get Ed Bishop to do the Captain Blue voice? Are the
characters designed to look like the puppets, or a bit more
human?

I think that they are going for a merge of the original design and modern tastes. The Angel
helmets are slightly modified and Captain Scarlet has a HUD visor he can call down like the
mike in the original series. Couldn't tell if the lights on the shoulders blink for communications.
The music is new but very Captain Scarletish.

Sounds like were both talking about different projects.

For the one Gerry's working on with Carlton they have Ed Bishop and
Francis Matthews providing the voices of Blue and Scarlet (and Gary
Martin attempting The Mysterons). They have been modelled from
cyber-scans of new moulds of the puppet heads, and the uniforms have
been updated to look a bit more functional (the caps have the
drop-down microphone, as in the original, not a head-up display).

There were no shots of any of the Angels, although an Interceptor is
seen flying. The SPV and SPC are both in it, and have been designed
much to the spirit of the originals.

I can't remember much about the music, which probably means it fits
in
well!

That's about all I can remember about the screening I went to (even
though we asked to see it three times!!).

Actually, the clip is on my site, the German site just links it.

Also, I should point out that the version on my site is *not* the final
version. This is an early test.

I added some comments on my site, but here you are:

This version was made specifically as a motion capture exercise, but
possibly also the company wanted to do a sexy looking version of the show
to impress Carlton. So they very quickly knocked up this promo. This
explains why the voices and faces are not the originals as there was no
time to go to that sort of trouble.

Hope this helps.
