Well, it's about time... :-)
I wonder if these are the existing 16:9 (cropped) HDTV transfers that were shown on US television, or someone remastered them in 4:3? (Either way, I'm getting this) Marc On September 20, "John R. Oh, I just read the description on Amazon. Aspect ratio
1.78, so these are the cropped versions. Oh no! I didn't read that, I just assumed they'd be 1:33 pillar-boxed
to match original aspect ratio...grrr! They make a big deal out of being remastered by Technicolor Creative (I just did a feature film (visual fx) with them by the way!) and then they mess it up. Double grrr. On Sep 20, 2012, at 4:13 PM, Marc Martin wrote: > Oh, I just read the description on Amazon. Technicolor was the company known to have done the widescreen
transfers of Thunderbirds and UFO many years ago. I think these were done specifically to be shown on "Family Room HD" (a now defunct satellite TV station). The Thunderbirds transfers got released on Blu-ray in the UK years ago, and it's about time the UFO ones did (although I think many people are going to be wanting the series redone in 4:3) Anyway, there's not likely to be much demand for these at these prices... Oh wait, maybe this *is* in 4:3... I just ran the Amazon.co.jp
description through translate.google.com, and this line looks interesting: "from 35mm negatives! Original implementation, into Blu-ray was realized in the first time in the world, like the original broadcast, recorded in the 4:3 screen size is the restoration carried out! Polite in the telecine "Technicolor Creative Services" U.S. decorated with bright colors are back!" So maybe this is a brand new remastering in 4:3? Can anyone read Japanese and confirm what this says? Marc |
Found this on a German site - supposedly a BluRay release in "original aspect ratio" happened in June.. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/UFO-Season-1-Episoden-01-09-Blu-ray/47511/ Nine episodes on a disk, though. Probably it's just a standard definition presentation on a high capacity medium. Ah well, nice for people who never bought the DVDs. James |

It's not much better in Pound Sterling, not including p&p about £201 GBP!

Yes, I bought one of those German UFO Blu-ray discs when it first
came out -- the video was standard definition PAL, no better quality than a DVD release. Was most of the cost paid for by Geneon Universal (hence the high price), or did ITV and A&E also contribute (since they may also be releasing the series on Blu-ray at some point). Marc |
