UFO Budget

If the logic that SHADO is too expensive for saving only a few lives then why is it we spend billions on defense forces that rarely see action? and why do we spend money to send only a handfull of people into space?
SHADO was set up to counter a threat from another planet that is currently only harvesting human organs. We don't know what else the Aliens want or why.
More importantly, I think the reason for SHADO was that Earth governments agreed that they would not lie down and let people be taken, their organs harvested, etc., without trying to fight back. As a point of interest for the UFO movie, the Inter-governmental cooperation angle would be interesting to explore. The Earth may unite and enter one government (Straker for world president anyone?) or be torn apart and ripe for alien conquest.
I look forward to all of your input.

Well yes, when put this way, the huge amount spent on defense and
space programs don't make economic sense either (I recently read that
the Pentagon's accounting system can't even account for 3 trillion
dollars!), so perhaps SHADO doesn't strain credibility so much after
all. :-)

And it wasn't like the producers of UFO were unaware of this aspect
-- Henderson was always complaining about SHADO's budget, and in KILL
STRAKER Foster pointed out (while under the influence of Aliens) that
all the money spent on SHADO would be better off spent elsewhere.

Yes, Marc, Foster did say while as you pointed out under the alien influence
that all the money spent on SHADO would be better spent else where. Why do
you think they made him say that? Because if the money was spent elsewhere
they wouldn't have SHADO to worry about.
