UFO DVD Episodes Edited?

SHADO
I was perusing the UFO message boards at IMDB, and someone there was saying that all the episodes on the UFO DVDs are edited except for "Identified".

Does anyone know if this is true?

I supposed it depends on which countries release we are talking about?

The UK/USA releases are uncut, and I suspect that most of the other
countries releases are uncut as well.

There may be some cuts in the French release, don't know about the
German release...

I didn't think they were edited.  Thanks, Marc!

Here is the exact text of the post at IMDB:

I only saw the first episode when it premiered in America in 1972, but in the late 70's one of our local channels (here in Massachusetts) aired six episodes a week for a year and the running order was vastly different than the on-line lists (or even the DVDs - which - except for the first episode are edited, by the way).

Marc, this is what the guy at the IMDB UFO page had to say in reply to my query:

"The DVD versions of both Space:1999 and UFO are not the complete versions, despite the "uncut" claims on the descriptions."

I've asked how he knows this, just waiting for his reply.

Rest assured that this person doesn't know what they are talking about...
... the DVD's are complete.

Some people tend to believe that they saw a scene 40 years ago, and
then believe that when that scene isn't there now that means it's cut.
But rather, it's just poor memory.

The shows were 50 minutes long to allow for 10 minutes of commercials.
The DVDs are 50 minutes long.  We have copies of the original scripts,
the original dialog continuity scripts, the original music & effects tracks,
audio & videotapes recorded in the 1970's and 1980's.  The DVDs
are uncut.

Thanks again, Marc!  Would you mind if I quote you in the discussion at IMDB?

I don't mind!

If anything was cut, believe me, someone here would have brought this up
here already.  After all, this discussion group has been around for almost
20 years, and we've had all sorts of experts here during that time (including
the people at the BBC who did the film-to-video transfer for the DVDs)

That said, there is one flaw on the USA DVD's -- the audio drops out for
a second during a scene in DESTRUCTION.  This flaw isn't present on
any other release other than the USA release.

(and I can't remember offhand which scene it is)

This is a bit off topic, but Marc, are you as knowledgeable about the Space: 1999 DVDs, by any chance?

I'm not as knowledgeable about SPACE:1999 in general as I am about UFO, but I've never heard anyone say that there was anything cut from them.  Of course, these days the DVDs may be irrelevant, since SPACE:1999 can be easily purchased on Blu-ray disc, which has better quality.

I do recall some controversy about the Space:1999 season 2 first episode, THE METAMORPH,
as multiple people recall seeing Maya transform into a fruit tree (or something), yet that scene
has never showed up on any home video version.  So that *might* be *one* cut... in the entire
series... :-)

And I just found a reference to this online:

"A scene in "The Metamorph" of Maya changing into an orange tree was
in early prints of the episode that were sent to television stations for a
special August, 1976 premiere of Season 2, and then was removed on
all films of the episode from September of 1976 onward."

So again, that's not a DVD issue, but rather changes that were made before
the show actually premiered.

But back to UFO...  :-)

... one of the things I mentioned as evidence of uncut episodes are "the dialog continuity scripts".
These were made at the time of production, and have every line of dialog that should be in every
episode.  So if there is something missing in the DVDs, then it should be in the dialog continuity
script but not in the DVD.

For example, here is the dialog continuity script for the UFO episode CONFLICT:

  http://ufoseries.com/temp/conflict.pdf

But if this person has a specific scene in UFO that they believe has been cut, then they should
describe it.  Of prove that it exists by posting a video of it.  :-)

Although I guess that was a bad example, since it looks like that PDF is missing the
last page.... but you get the general idea...  :-)
