Hi All,
Okay, our 2 weeks are up for discussing the UFO episode COURT MARTIAL. Next up is... CLOSE UP So, anyone got any comments they'd like to make on this episode? -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |
Hi Marc,
Well, this is an episode you either love or hate - usually hate... No real interaction between the regular characters (which is what you really 'tune in' for)... totally about the technology (such as it is)... Satellite follows 'u.f.o.' back to home planet... where ? end shots of series seem to suggest '10th planet' of solar system rather than somewhere halfway across the galaxy... ditto for the months taken for photos to be transmitted back to Earth... My least favourite episode (but then, I don't like sci-fi anyway, and much prefer people-based drama to kiddie space cadet soap opera) end of rant (for now !), Andy ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think the end credits sequence is supposed to be symbolic -- the final planet shown *is* the Alien planet, but it's not really that close to the Earth & moon... (although, as a kid, I thought it was supposed to be Mars) Also, according to the UFO "writers guide" (published in old issues of Fanderson's "FAB" magazine), the Alien planet is supposed to be in the Alpha Centauri solar system (the nearest solar system to our own) -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

After the Lord Mayor's Show means nothing here Jimbo.

James wrote: > After the Lord Mayor's Show means nothing here Jimbo. > > Care to enlighten us. So the expression has come to represent any situation where something really good is followed by something that's quite bad. Often used in sporting journalism when a team has a good result one week then gets hammered the next, but appropriate here as well. So it's my roundabout way of saying, after discussing a great episode - Court Martial - it's time to talk about a real stinker - Close Up. Who wins the bet? :) James |

Straker was definately flirting with Lt Ellis, but then who can blame
him? Whether you like this episode or not you certainly get some nice views of Lt Elis less the wig (but short skirt and trim figure) - one of my first crushes I think ? As we used to say 'One for the dads' ?!. What I always thought about this episode was if the Aliens were more advanced why didn't they detect the probe and why not just blow it up?. JPS |

A planet of our Sun that far out would be an iceball and far too cold for UFO- aliens or anything else to live there. The Dan Dare space series that was written in tne Eagle comic in England in the 1950's started with a policy to stay within our Solar Systam, and so had to put humanoid aliens in sone unlikely places (e.g. Saturn's moons, and Triton (a satellite of Neptune)) before its writers realized that they had to allow an FTL drive into the story and go to other stars. |

Unfortunately I will be traveling to Texas in preparation for operative training, er PhD work, that month. Nina was actually my favorite of the Moonbase ops. Strictly business, no nonsense, but very personable once you got to know her. She also wore her purple wig much better than Ellis or Harrington. Be sure and put up lots of pictures for us!! |

Hi all,
So, does anyone have anything left to say about the UFO episode CLOSE UP? If not, then we should turn our attention to the next UFO episode up for discussion -- CONFETTI CHECK A-OK! Marc |
So - since it's been so quiet - does anyone have anything to say
about this episode? Here's the description from Marc's site to refresh your memory: CONFETTI CHECK A-OK -- After a SHADO operative has a baby, Straker recalls his own marriage of ten years ago. His marriage starts out happily enough, but becomes strained as he spends all of his time away from home working on the creation of SHADO. How can he make his wife understand that he's being faithful without compromising SHADO's security? For one, does anyone recall where the title came from? I haven't watched it lately (can't stand the ex-Mrs. Straker) but I can't recall the meaning right off the top of my head.
