Lots of action, suspense, and of course, the great confrontation scene between Straker and Paul in the Command Sphere! I also really get a kick out of Alec's lines throughout the episode, especially when he's dealing with Henderson. A believable premise for this story with the brainwashing, as well as lots of angst for Straker as he deals with Paul's disloyalty. But nothing tops the final scene in the SHADO armory! Every time I watch that part, I keep thinking: what if Paul had shot???? Loved it! 10+ Denise _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Loved it! 10+ > I agree with Denise, it's a very memorable episode with lots of dramatic tension between Straker, Foster and Freeman. Two things about the legendary armoury scene though - firstly the bit where Straker demonstrates superhuman prowess with the rifle is really cheesy. Secondly as Denise suggests, Foster COULD have killed Straker, superhuman shooting skills or not. So Straker would seem to be taking a huge risk with his own life. I hate the corny 'quite a guy' bit at the end as well - it makes me cringe! Love Paul's suit in that scene though, don't think I could carry off that colour myself. On the whole it's one of the very best episodes I think. Michael Billington once said: "I quite liked Kill Straker for quite different reasons. It is full of double entendres and worked beautifully as a self-mockery of a latent homosexual attraction between Foster and Straker - if I can't have you then nobody will" in an interview transcribed somewhere on Marc's site. I wrote to him about a year ago to ask if he thought that this scene was intentionally homo-erotic and he replied that "retrospectively it would seem to be clear that there was a more than unusual bond between Foster and Straker" James |

And in his reply to my question he was careful to use the term 'retrospectively'. I'm personally sure that there was no intentional suggestion whatever that any of the UFO characters had gay tendencies. But everyone reads things into UFO that were never intended, _especially_ on this list! |

<<I have said before and I will say again that there was no attraction of an undue kind between Straker and Foster... grateful that Yuchtar isn't on this list... >> Given that Straker and Foster are fictional characters, how they feel about each other must surely be a matter of interpretation - both by viewers of the programme, and even more so by the actors playing the roles. I've never been able to see anything more than a degree of hero-worship of Straker by Foster - unreciprocated, at that. However, if one of the actors - Mike B. - or a fan - Yuchtar - suspect a homosexual attraction to Straker on the part of Foster, I can live with that (even if I don't agree with it). <<Foster's atttraction to women is portrayed throughout the series... Then take a look... at how Straker takes in the sight of Jo Fraser... he was checking her out... My point being neither man is homosexual.>> Doesn't mean they mightn't 'swing both ways', so to speak... after all, it's a well-known fact that all good-looking guys are at least slightly gay (or so us not-so-good-looking guys keep telling each other, to cheer ourselves up about not being in the good-looking guy category :^ ). And as for 'Butch' Straker and 'Pretty Boy' Foster... <g,d&r> <<To quote Silli-uh Billington>> I think that's unfair. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, especially if they were one of the actors involved, and for people to cast aspersions about their motives in putting forward that opinion (as is done in other messages in the group) is IMO both unfair and unpleasant. (And now that I look at the episode again, the 'double entendres' might indeed be taken to imply 'undue attraction'... for example, Straker telling Foster to 'spit it out !' :0 ). <<Ed Bishop seems fond of slapping Billington around. He does it in Kill Straker obviously, but if you recall , he does it in Mindbender too.>> Apparently some gay guys like that sort of thing !<g,d & running very, very fast> <<one would assume that they taught Fulbright winning students how to FAKE slaps. Did Ed Bishop not show up that day? <G> >> Alan Perry, director of the episode, says in the 'Fanderson' 'UFO Documentary' that he didn't realise until they came to shoot the scene that you simply can't fake a slap - you gotta do it for real ! (Though you probably don't have to do it so hard that it leaves the slapee stunned, as Mike B. clearly is in this scene !). Andy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
