UFO Episode Discussions - REFLECTIONS IN THE WATER

Hi all,

As usual, I haven't been moving our UFO episode discussions forward at the
usual rate. The next episode up for discussion is REFLECTIONS IN THE
WATER. Anyone have any comments on this episode. To me, this is an
episode that didn't "age" well. As a kid, I remember this being a really
cool episode, with that cool underwater dome, UFOs coming out of volcanos,
duplicate SHADO members, and a giant battle at the end. However, seeing it
years later, it seems rushed, silly in places, and the entire battle at the
end is merely made up of footage already seen in previous episodes (not to
mention that they use 4 Interceptor missiles during the battle!)

Comments anyone?

Marc

Hi,
for some reason (speaking now as a 40 year old!) I don't remember this
episode "first time around" and caught it on a BBC repeat around 4
years ago. It didn't actually feel like an earlier, stilted (i.e.
pseudo puppet)episode but more like a regular Sci-Fi TV episode which
I think, all in all, counts in its favour. We are clearly seeing the
influence of David Tomblin here(who Hollywood obviously now
recognise!) with good editing and plot development. What do others
think of the Thunderbirds-style montage at the beginning?

No, it may not fit in with the established UFO milieu but it is a good
standalone story. One obvious point for world leaders: are the current
diversions of shoals of fish among the world's waterways due to global
warming, or something more sinister?

Hmmm - when was the last time the BBC shoewd UFO? I think it
was a bit more than four years ago. I remember people on the
list complaining that it was getting usurped in favour of the
tennis, or was it cricket ..

Just checked my old list archive - in fact it was 1999 so you're
right.

I have vague recollections of seeing it when it first appeared in the
early 70s, after which the next time I saw it was in the late 80s, as
part of Invasion UFO. At that time I thought it wasn't a bad little
episode, with a truly spectacular finale. And then I saw the BBC2
repeats in the late 90s, and then the Digital Entertainment videos,
and I felt cheesed off at the realisation that the battle at the end
of "Reflections" was nothing but a compilation of clips from previous
episodes!

One moment that I can't stand is at the end, where the Captain of
SkyDiver recieves his orders on the phone (!!??), presses a switch
(to open the chute?) and runs to the chute. As he goes down, he
realises that he's forgotten his helmet! The whole scene should have
been re-taken!

In all, it seems to me that the episode promises much, but at the
end, delivers something else.

Ah Yes!.... the episode that makes you wonder why we ever needed all of
SHADO, when we had Peter Carlin!...
