Only speaking for myself -- no.
It's a cool model and the SFX are great -- but the UFO itself is not that interesting. It would have been nice if they did something with it -- like have landing legs, opening hatch, etc. I think in one episode we see a small lifeboat leave the mothership, but that's about it (I haven't seen the last 13 episodes yet). But although the UFO doesn't have a lot of interesting features, I do think it's a brilliant design - it's simple, but very distinctive. I love the rotating paddles especially. One thing I always thought was badly done though, was the sinister green light that appears to be used to radiate thought control waves - the one we see in 'Flight Path'. It looks exactly like a cheap light bulb stuck haphazardly onto the top of the model, which I suspect is exactly what it is :) |

I might...if I were Ed Wood, Jr. :D
I cringe every time I see that thing wobbling across the scren, it's just so...not scary! (Imagine if Darth Vader made his big entrance at the beginning of Star Wars, on crutches with his leg in a cast.) I mean, if you're going to call your show "UFO" you'd better make sure you've got a damn good UFO! The overall design is fine, but the model just doesn't "fly" very well. Maybe it needed a sixth wire? I have to admit it *sounds* pretty menacing though... I remember when watching UFO for the first time being scared to death (as
were all my kid friends). There was something so deliciously sinister and yet appealing about that ominous little silver craft and their alien inhabitants. We use to go and play UFO in the local woods, hoping that we would find a UFO crash landing site as in the episode Computer Affair. This went on for years. You have to remember, children really believe their games; and live them (if they are any good). Well, I was a child, and it was a children's program, we really believed in our minds eye what we were seeing, and imagining, that was half the fun. Also, for 1969 the effects in the series put everything else in the shade (including most films - 2001 (sorry Yuccie) was in the process of being made) it was SO real, especially for a TV program. I remember my parents wondering what all the fuss was about, until they watched it! Then they were hooked. On one occasion, there was myself, my 4 sisters, 2 brothers, my parents, and about 10 school friends all squeezed in front of the TV - many of us hiding under the proverbial blanket, peeking out to see what was happening and giving a running commentary to those less daring. I was only about 7, but I found the episode ESP especially sinister :) - we played that game for weeks, and at night would listen out for the eerie sound of a UFO attempting to crash into our house!!! I also remember finally realizing (when I was a little bit older) what it was about Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet etc that was so enticing; the worlds that Gerry and Sylvia created was entirely artificial... (children do not differentiate) after watching for a few minutes I completely forgot that they were puppets, and 'saw 'past' the inadequacies of the technical limitations of puppetry at the time (this was over thirty years ago!) I am afraid, Doug that you may be watching the series through the eyes of one a little older and too realistic (cynical would be unfair) to appreciate the series for what it was at the time. Think 9 years old, with 1960's technologies, and values, and you will realize why after over 30 years, people are still hooked!. Best to All :) Griff -----Original Message----- From: Doug Carlson [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 5:25 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] UFO Obsession I might...if I were Ed Wood, Jr. :D I cringe every time I see that thing wobbling across the scren, it's just so...not scary!
