UFO Obsession

Mark Davies-3
Brilliant,Griff ! Thats exactly how I remember,and appreciate UFO even now.As a child I bought the Barratt
sweet cigarettes by the box and used to wander home in
a trance opening them.Buying the countown magazine after I came home from school was a ritual.

I still pass selected shrine like features that I recall from those days in 1970/1971and my mind is taken back instantly to my childhood. And the UFO model lies at the centre of my memory.

Exactly! I remember seeing UFO for the first time, it was the last
quarter of A QUESTIONS OF PRIORITIES (in black and white - those were
the days :-) and I was so frightend by the Alien and the UFO itself
(well, I was ten years old) so it was love at first sight. The
sinister look and sound of the UFO fascinated me (and still does!).

At this time there were no X-FILES, CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE THIRD KIND
or INDEPENDENCE DAY (to name a few) around, only THE INVADERS (which
wasn't shown in Austria) and THE OUTER LIMITS (which wasn't dubbed
into German) so the UFOs in UFO were outstanding. I even didn't dare
to watch the show alone :-)

I had (and still have) the three Dinky Toys models (Interceptor,
Mobile and Straker's car) and used to play with them mostly. And
every time I watch an episode or take a look at my collectors albums
I'm instantly back in 1972/73. And that's great, man! :-))

In my case, probably since the seventies, and even to this day, when
I see the moon in a waxing or quarter phase during the day and with
a blue sky background, I usually think about UFO!! This is because
of the image of the moon during the opening sequence (which is taken
from I-don't-remember-which-episode). By the way, it wasn't until I
got my UFO Set 1 that I realized that this image of the moon with
the blue sky was not the real thing, but most likely a painting!

Also, for many of my childhood years, I took for granted that UFOs
really existed, and thought that they looked like the UFOs in
the series! It probably wasn't until the late 70s that I finally
figured out that UFOs have never been confirmed (and most likely
don't exist)!

I am afraid, Doug that you may be watching the series through the eyes of
one a little older and too realistic (cynical would be unfair) to appreciate
the series for what it was at the time. Think 9 years old, with 1960's
technologies, and values, and you will realize why after over 30 years,
people are still hooked!.

Best to All :)

You said it right Griff. I was a little disappointed when, after twenty-odd
years of remembering UFO in memories, etc. that I got my first video set. As
an adult, watching again I remember thinking...how did I think this was so
cool back then? But as you said it, kids don't notice the little things that
make adults remember its NOT real. Obviously I was so taken by it as a kid
that it stuck with me for so many years, as no other TV show did back then!
So now I watch from a whole new perspective, much more forgiving of the
little things I see as an adult...
