UFO Red Alert...

teresa.cerana
Dear All,

as you may recall, and as featured on ISOSHADO's website since some time now, we
are pleased to let you know that ISOSHADO was involved in the production of
the the first 3 (out of 5) UFO Italian film-compilations on DVD.

Such "compilations" were made by putting together sequences and scenes taken
from various UFO episodes and were produced in Italy in 1973 and 1974.

They immediately became very popular in our country, at a point that other
countries (Spain, Germany and even Japan on VHS, in the Eighties) bought
them for their respective markets.

The opportunity to have UFO in color at the cinemas (in the Seventies the
Italian TV was only broadcasting in B&W) acknowledged and emphasized the
success which Italy had credited to UFO since 1971!

The first of the three DVDs (UFO Allarme Rosso... Attacco alla Terra!) is
being distributed in Italy since last week, the second one (UFO Distruggete
Base Luna) will be available in a month and the third UFO film-compilation
(UFO... Annientare SHADO Stop. Uccidete Straker) will be available at the
end of June 2005.

ISOSHADO's involvement in the DVDs project includes: texts and pictures for
the DVDs booklet and additional materials for the special/bonus contents
(photos, merchandise items, movie trailers etc.).

Bye now.

When these movies do appear, will they be in the original language that they were produced in, or dubbed into Italian, or maybe have multiple-language options? I'd be interested in seeing these movies, as seeing the poster art on the various websites has always intrigued me.

Thanks for your prompt reply, to which my immediate reaction was "Curses, foiled again!" However, having said that, it would still be interesting to see the movies regardless of what language they were in. Also, it's sometimes interesting to hear characters speaking in different voices. Besides, I think I'd be able to get the drfit of the storylines contained therein. A thought occurs to me: Even though the audio is in Italian only, are subtitles available? If so, hopefully in English. If not cest la vie...

Bad luck once again: everything is in italian: sleeve, inner booklet (4
pages) and subtitles... FYI, the movie is composed of parts from Cat with
ten lives, Psychobombs and Timelash.

Ciao! :-)

Well, maybe it is a blessing in disguise. You are spared a few nonsense....
These compilations were a sort of Frankenstein made up from slices and bits
of UFO episodes, usually arranged in a very unlikely way.

For instance, in this DVD you may notice that there are short sequences
involving Shado mobiles, taken from Computer affair and Sound of silence;
they had to set up some battle between a UFO and a few Shado mobiles.
However, there was a little problem, since the first sequence is in full
daylight, and the second one occurs at night. No problem: a Shado mobile
pilot (well, the dubber) orders something like "Artificial night!", and
there you are.....

In the next compilation movie to appear on DVD (Distruggete baseluna, ->
Destroy moonbase), there is a long sequence taken from A question of
priority. However, they have twisted the plot a little: the alien is no
traitor; he is there to place a machine playing havoc with Shado
communications (in fact, when I was a child, I couldn't understand why
aliens fried one of them....).

These (terrible) compilations had a couple of reasons:
1) Italian television dubbed only 16 episodes, so a few of them could be
exploited to make some money (UFO was a HUGE success here in the early
seventies);
2) in those years, Italian TV was black and white: a movie was the right
way to see UFO in color (and on the BIG screen, which was by far the best
feature, the only one I still miss....)

Cheers

There was an American release of a movie, titled "Invasion UFO" which I found as a rental VHS when I was in Florida several years ago. It incorporated mostly "Reflections In The Water" and was based around that. Maybe the company responsible for that one released some other compilation movies as well.

Curses - foiled again! Having said that, if ever I do get a hold of these DVDs, it will bw interesting to hear familiar characters speaking in different voices. That's why when I get DVDs these days, I like it if there are foreign Language options. With UFO, I'm familiar with the episodes and storylines so that I know whats going on. But then again, it seems that the storylines have been altered a bit here and there.

Regardless of this, thank you for your information.

Thank you for the information. It is a bit annoying when episodes are mucked about in the way that you describe, but as you say, at the time these "movies" were the only opportunity people will have had to see SHADO in colour. Having said that, I'd be interested in seeing them out of curiosity. I'll have to start looking for a website that will bring these items into the UK.

The company behind Invasion UFO was ITC, and this was one of a number of feature-length compilations that they put out in the early 1980s. There were three Thunderbirds "movies", two Stingray "movies", two Captain Scarlet "movies", one Joe 90 "movie", and four Space: 199 "movies", as well as the one UFO "movie". Invasion UFO almost works as a movie, but not quite. When we get to about an hour into the movie, Straker's hairstyle changes - subtly, granted, but noticably - and a lot of characters suddenly disappear to be replaced by new characters. A shot from ESP is used as a bridging shot to facilitate this. Then the ending is a bit abrupt - it seems that footage of SID being attacked by a UFO has been added for no real reason, and then the Straker voice over from Identified "The long finger of tragic coincidence" is played over the end titles. I suppose the intent was to show that in a war such as described in the series - and this movie - there are casualties, and even SHADO
can get it in the neck.

Hi all,

By the way, yesterday I received a copy of the record album that
(supposedly) contains the theme music to Invasion:UFO. Rather
than setup my record player and pre-amp and connect it to my
PC, I'm going to have it professionally transfered to CD by
a local recording studio. So it'll probably be another week
or two before I can actually say for sure that this is the
right album.

I'm looking forward to hearing this! (and the album says
it is in stereo, which will be new way of hearing this
music)
