UFO Remakes & Star Trek Continues

Hi all,

I know that the whole topic of remakes is very controversial,
and as such many folks are skeptical about any UFO remake
every being made.

However, over the weekend I just watched this brand
new fan-produced remake of the original Star Trek TV
series ("Star Trek Continues"), and was very impressed
with the concept, in that in many ways, this looks and
feels like an original 1960's episode of Star Trek:

Now this sort of UFO remake I'd be interested in
seeing...

Talking about remakes, let me ask this question.  The script writer, would you want to have the person watch all the episodes or just receive a over view of the characters and basic concepts?

The reason I asked, I watched the latest Star Trek remake.  While I enjoyed it, I felt the writers used portions of the scripts and plot devices from the original series, the movies, and even a plot device from one of the Godfather movies.  Come on, having Kirk threaten the Gorn with a offer they cant refuse.... (Ok, I am kidding about the offer that cant be refused, but a scene did remind me of the Godfather)

There was also the original Trek episode "A Piece of the Action" (a world
that has copied Earth's 1930s, including being run by mob bosses) where
Kirk uses a similar line near the end (don't remember if it was exactly
that line, however).

Hey, thanks for the heads up! They're brilliant... (all 4 episodes) some very talented people behind this work. In a way, they are just like and very true to the original, especially the color grading, sound and general pacing.

Fantastic!

Wouldn't it be great to have the same kind of follow-up for UFO... I'd much prefer this approach any day ... not interested in the slightest in any Wham... Bamm... Explosion... Effect.. Effect... type movie.

Thank you,

Griff

I had to look it up, I think you meant this line spoken by one of the
gangsters...

The most co-operative man is a dead man, shut your mouth or you will start
co-operating.

Re: UFO Remakes & Star Trek Continues

Pam McCaughey-2
I havent commented on site for some time. Pretty much have given up on the idea of a real UFO remake/reboot being  done and maybe we've missed the window of opportunity a long time ago.

The Trek reboot by Abrams disappointed and dismayed me so much in 2009 that I've opted not to see this second to protect my own brain and love of the original series. I've read four out of six reviews that just parroted all my own misgivings about the first movie and basically broke it down to be a poorly conceived rip off of the Wrath of Khan. One reviewer even pointed out did Trek have any relevance left because of the way Abrams treated it. And it made only 84 million in its opening weekend compared to Fast and Furious 6 that doubled that amount! I realize my POV here won't be popular so I'll segue into why this applies to UFO:

Look at all the recent reboots both of  film franchises and TV shows. The so called new Hawaii 5-0 is just a rerun of CSI Miami that lacks David Caruso. The Lost in Space movie, Thunderbirds I could go on but you'll get the drift. All very poorly executed no matter how much $ was thrown at them. With such a track record we cannot expect anyone in 2013 to "get" UFO except us fans. I LOVE UFO. Always have. But without our beloved characters being themselves, and not just strangers wearing our heroes' names to keep the fanboys happy, I have no hope of anything reasonable. ESP in the wrong hands. Now Abrams has been handed the keys to Star Wars. Be afraid. Be very afraid....

Re: UFO Remakes & Star Trek Continues

distrakt
Just want to chime in: I agree with the sentiments here on Star Trek (which
I loved every second of... but it was bad and I won't need to see it
again!) and most of Pam's movie notes.

Except. Thunderbirds movie! I loved it! Even though it focused on some kids
in the woods which is usually not my favorite thing. Well it was OK in The
Incredibles, too, I guess. But I very much enjoyed the Thunderbirds movie
several times. I thought they got the look, and that it was hilarious and
respectful. Ok there I said it.

And sigh for JJ+Starwars indeed.

Let me know when we start UFO Season Three fan production, I'll show up
with some plywood to build a moonbase.  // dvb

The Lost in Space movie, Thunderbirds I could go on but you'll get the drift. All very poorly executed no matter how much $ was thrown at them. With such a track record we cannot expect anyone in 2013 to "get" UFO except us fans. I LOVE UFO. Always have. But without our beloved characters being themselves, and not just strangers wearing our heroes' names to keep the fanboys happy, I have no hope of anything reasonable. ESP in the wrong hands. Now Abrams has been handed the keys to Star Wars. Be afraid. Be very afraid....

I do love the eps! It's so darn cute! Our heroes stayed in character totally but it was a nice departure as was the Tribbles eps. Even the X-Files had comedic eps that worked well! But very little comedy in the layer Trek incarnations except for the DS9 homage to the Tribbles and their spoof on James Bond films.

Re: UFO Remakes & Star Trek Continues

Long time reader... first time writer...

Well... count me in the rare minority. I just loved the heck out of "Into Darkness" and I can't wait to see it again with the family. I thought it fired off on all cylinders with great pacing. It was a good blend of "Space Seed" and "Wrath of Kahn". (In fact, I watched "Wrath of Kahn" again once I got home from the movie, and it didn't diminish my initial reaction to "Into Darkness".)

There were actual character arcs in a Star Trek film (which rarely happens). Sure, a character may gain a small bit of wisdom, but essentially they end up back in the same place where they began (the exception being "Wrath of Kahn"). The lack of character arcs is one of my biggest gripes about any of the Trek series. I enjoy "Deep Space Nine" because it's the only one that has any sort of arcs (but those were mostly regulated to Dax, Jake and the Ferengi). "Enterprise" had a few arcs as well.

I'm more of a fan of the genre of science fiction so somehow remakes or reboots aren't going to faze me. I enjoy seeing other people's interpretation of a series (or books, or comics). I suppose that stems from my journalism background: Getting different viewpoints and interpretations on a single event.

I'm really looking forward to what Abrams brings to the table for the Star Wars franchise. I thought Lucas had some good ideas, but overall it grew stale with him directing.

Here's what I understand about what Abrams does: His films and shows are generally about relationships and the interference and obstacles that hinder those relationships. That's the filter I use when I watch something done by Abrams. The rest is just set dressing.

I enjoined it too. Ive been a fan since the early 70s and STID adds to the good storytelling. I don’t get the Star Trek hate.

I've watched Star Trek since the 60s, and I liked both of the "reboot"
movies by JJ Abrams.

I enjoyed it.. but...

I didn’t like the trailer teaser, gave a wrong impression of what happens in the movie.

In the Wrath of Khan.. Kirk yelled Khan for a reason, that was dramatic dialog.  Into Darkness, did the character really need to scream it?

I will probably get the 3d bluray when available.  But I hope the next screen writers just have a outline of the characters.  Don’t watch the movies or the TV series.

No, Casino Royale was a reboot; Skyfall is just another adventure the follows Quantum of Solace but several years later.

then Skyfall is a reboot of a reboot.  we are introduced to Moneypenny for the first time.  There is no longer a Q branch as we understand it.
