£30.00 for a CD? As well as the subscription to Fanderson! I think not. Especially as there doesn't seem to be any mention of what is on the CD. Or am I the only one who thinks its a bit of a rip-off? It only cost a little more than £50 for the DVDs - and i can put those on my ipod and listen to them any time. Perhaps I am getting tight-fisted in my old age!
Sorry Gerry; I won't be taking you up on your CD offer. Bring the price down to a reasonable level first. Louise |

> not. This is similar to the cost of the original 2-disc UFO soundtrack. The problem is that the club is limited in the number they can sell, so they cannot make up for the initial outlay with high volume of sales. Also, the clubmakes a high quality product, with a rather thick color booklet, so that drives up the cost. Previously there had been mention of a public release of a one disc versionfrom Silva Screen. If this is ever released, it will certainly have a more "normal" price associated with it, and far more sales volume. > Especially as there doesn't seem to be any mention of what is on > the CD. My understanding is that this should be pretty similar to the original 2003, so many of us can tell you in great detail what's on the CD. "Music recorded for use on the UFO TV series" sums it up nicely. :-) The original discs contained 155 minutes of music. Much of it remixed into stereo (only IDENTIFIED and THE LONG SLEEP are in mono, due to the fact that they couldn't locate the multi-track masters for these episodes) > It only cost a little more than £50 for the DVDs - and i can put > those on my ipod and listen to them any time. I would think that you could put the music from UFO CDs onto your iPod as well? And the DVDs were a mass-marketed item, with sales far, far greater than this soundtrack CD. Marc |

I can only begin to imagine how much work goes into all the CDs offered thru Fanderson. The Singray CD was great. I imagine the UFO CD will be just as awesome! I was not a member of Fanderson in 2003, so I missed out on the first UFO CD, which quickly sold out. I'm so glad for this second chance. And living "over the pond" I will pay the extra for the overseas shipping - gladly. Just can't figure out why anyone complains, or even suggests that this is a "rip off". But I guess everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I think you know mine!

But I don't think they realize what's involved in putting these discs together. As I recall, the original master tapes were falling apart (being quite old), and they had to be "baked" so they could be played once for transfer to a digital medium -- I think they used Abbey Roads Studio for this (?) Then each track exists as a 4-track recording, which needs to be mixed to 2-track (stereo). And of course, there are many, many hours of materials which have to be gone through to get it down to something that will fit onto 2 discs. I think some money had to go the musicians union. Also, printing a small run of 500 (or 1000) discs is certainly more expensive than making many thousands of discs. And the club was not allowed to print more by the license holders, nor does the club have that kind of money to pay for the manufacturing of many discs that may sit around for years (I think it took 3 years for the original UFO soundtrack to sell out) Even with the high price, I think the profit for each disc was around $1. Perhaps some people can't afford that much. The other problem I have with expensive CDs is that if they are overpriced, then people are more likely tocopy them.? It's not something I would ever do, but I know a lot of peoplewho would. Oh well, I will do without the music. I just have portraits of the UFO cast all over my classroom instead!! Makes work sooooo good!

Yes, that's perfectly understandable, and like I said before, we have been expecting a lower cost, single disc version of the UFO soundtrack for years. But so far, this has not been released, even though Silva Screen has released many other Gerry Anderson soundtrack CDs in recent years. Marc |
