UFO Theme

Marc Martin-2
Hi All,

As computer technology marches forwards, I've been playing around
and have created the following UFO theme MP3, which is higher quality
than the one that's been on my website for the past couple years:

http://ufo.simplenet.com/beg.mp3

However, this raises an interesting question -- is higher quality
neccessarily better? This version is so crisp that I can now
hear flaws in the original performance, which is kind of annoying.

Any opinions?

Of course, if you have cheap computer speakers, I don't
think you're going to hear any difference, so it's probably not
worth the download...

P.S. Dave, don't replace the track on your UFO soundtrack CD with
this one... I think we can save this for volume 2... ;-)

I'd been led to believe that the material presented on Dave's
pirate CDs was not available elsewhere (the UFO theme is certainly
available on at least one commercial release) - is this not the
case?

Well, first things first... we need to review which commercial
releases contain the UFO theme. Then, we need to eliminate
all cover versions. Then, we need to eliminate versions which
include the teletype noise (Cult Files). Then, we need to eliminate
the ones which used the wrong take of the music (Sci-Fi Channel).

What does that leave us? Is the original UFO theme available
actually available commercially? As of a few years ago the
answer was "no", but I suppose things might have changed and
I just didn't notice...

I was thinking of the Cult Files release, with the teletype noise.

OK - I take your point that it's a slightly different version,
but it is, after all, essentially the same tune. I think it's
reasonable to suppose that some folks who just want a copy of the
theme music might not particularly care whether the teletype
noise was present, and it's unfortunate therefore that in one or
two cases, the copyright owners won't be getting their fair due.

BTW on second thoughts, I shouldn't really have used the term
'pirate' in my last mail - I realise that these CDs aren't being
passed off as official releases.

Apologies to everyone who finds the copyright issue boring -
I'll stop now.

Regards
James

The version on the Cult Files CD is essentially just a recording off
of a videotape of the show. It's not derived from the higher
quality recordings that Barry Gray originally recorded for the
series. And for some of us, this makes a difference. Heck, I
think this new version I uploaded today is *much* different
than the version I've had on my music page, but like you say, there
are folks who probably couldn't tell the difference between a cover
version and the real thing.

Also, please note that the UFO theme on the Cult Files CD is also
not complete, because the end theme fades into and obscures the
beginning of the music. So I think this version is clearly
unnacceptable.

But I'm sure if there's another CD which has a complete, non-teletype
version of the UFO theme, somebody on this mailing list must know
about it. I have many CD's containing UFO themes on them, but
they are mostly cover versions or messed up. I know that Fanderson
gave out an EP back in 1988 which had the original version, but
this was never available "commercially", and is certainly not something
you could buy from them for the past 10 years.

So somebody name the CD, and I will buy it today! (pulls out
credit card) :-)

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!! You let the cat out of the bag! And we
haven't even started production yet! Everyone, pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain, he has no idea what he's blabbing about, there is no
UFO Volume II CD available yet!

Just give us a couple months...

Could this "pirate" version of the UFO theme be a re-playing and re-recording?

Some mistakes in the above statement -- I was thinking not of a
"Cult Files" CD, but a "This is... Cult Fiction Royale". The UFO
track starts with the end theme which blends into the Century 21
sting (ruining both of these), which is immediately followed
by the main theme with teletype sound effects. The main theme
is fortunately not destroyed by the fading.
