UFO and The Prisoner

Yuchtar-2
Hi, All!

Just saw an ep of The Prisoner and there was ol' Rubber Lips himself
(Derren Nesbit), but then I recognized another voice and sure enough,
Wanda Ventham was in the same ep! Heh - their affair went way back, eh?
;-)

The ep in question was called "It's Your Funeral"

Nite=nite!

Its that whole Six Degrees of Separation thing. I found out when I was doing
the Video Raiders articles for SHADO USECC that I kept finding the main cast
members in films and TV series that had UFO guest stars in the same film or
TV episode. You can link up just about all the cast members to the others
members without using UFO in six or less films or TV shows.

Well .... during our recent meeting with Wanda, she recalled pretty well
the experience of shooting "The man who came back" with ol' rubber lips, in
particular the scene when he kisses her in the Moonbase leisure sphere. She
said it was the first scene of the day, 8:30 in the morning, and it wasn't
exactly a pleasing event ....

Re: UFO and The Prisoner

John Medany
It is a fact that a lot of 60's/70's brit Sci Fi was incredibly incestuous -
Partly due to ITC making allmost all the programs so the same casting people
were used on a lot of them ... I almost choked when watching one of the
shows (I think it was a Randel and Hopkirk) and the Brig and the Master from
Dr. Who turned up working together .. This is certainly true for
Prisoner/Dangerman/UFO/Randel and Hopkirk et al.

Bottom line is that a lot of the shows had the same people in them - espec
the Anderson shows where the UFO actors also did a fair number of the voices
for the supermarionation shows...

Thanks Paolo for that tidbit from Wanda Ventham! I wish there
was some way for all of us to learn more about what Wanda had
to say about UFO. I see from the photos on the ISOSHADO website
that she still had the purple blouse from TIMELASH. Did she
have an interesting stories about TIMELASH? Or the blouse,
for that matter? :-)

Yes, there is one. When Wanda stepped in, at the beginning of the second
batch of episodes, there was no script written for a ``female''
deputy-Straker. And in fact she was not too happy with her parts. However
Sylvia Anderson reassured her: they were preparing something special for
her. Indeed, it was the Timelash episode.

Whereas in other episodes she had to wear relatively ``martial'' clothing
(such as a tunic; she was a colonel, after all), in this one she had to be
a woman rather than a colonel. So the purple blouse came up. But there is
something more. Gerry Anderson used to control everything through a monitor
in his room. When they were shooting this episode, he sent the fatal order:
Wanda had to undo one more button of her blouse ... Apparently, one guy was
not too happy about that: Ed Bishop complained something like ``no one will
look at me''.

Anyway, her husband Tim (who attended our event too), has been fast to
point out that he has been the only one who got to undo all those buttons.

Cheers

Some people have all the luck.
But if this is so just where was he in the "Rutland Weekend Rain in Hendon"
episode of Rutland Weekend Television that aired in 1975? Rutland Weekend
Televison was a series that Eric Idle did after Monty Python. In this
episode Wanda plays a Emcee who has a affair with her co-emcee played by
David Battley. It ends up with them nude on the floor of the studio at the
end of the episode.

Wanda also appeared in another episode "Rutland Weekend Warning System".

Anyone in England who has seen this series, please comment.

Oh yes! I remember Rutland Weekend Television fondly, and
remember the nude couple on the floor, but didn't realise
that it was Wanda Wentham!

or maybe it was Vanda Ventham.
but however we spell her name we all would like a good look at that scene.
Purely in the interest of viewing all the things the UFO cast has done of
course.

I just did some searching on the net about this, and amazingly
enough, this entire episode is online (!), viewable with
RealPlayer at:

http://www.pythonet.org/video.html

Just look for:

"Rutland Weekend Television - Rain in Hendon (30.7 MB)"

Wanda plays a few parts in this episode. Didn't see
any Wanda nudity at the end though... perhaps this
was cut out? :-(

It's online!!!!????

No Wanda nudity at the end? Well either it was cut or James Gibson missed
remembered the nude couple on the floor at the end. In either case
darn(actually my statement about this would be more damming but I'm trying to
keep it PG to keep Marc happy<g>)

There are multiple bits with these two announcers getting increasingly
frisky, but at the end of the episode you see a shirtless guy being
pulled down to the floor by Wanda. However, you can only see
Wanda's face and arm. Perhaps this scene was cut short on the online
version, or perhaps there was supposed to be a bit after the credits,
or perhaps there never was a nude couple on the floor at the end
(I found an episode guide which has a description which matches what
I see online)

James - for someone who was fairly quick to jump on my 'Wanda
Wentham' typo - you could do with a few typing lessons yourself!

I do remember it, though I haven't seen it for about twenty
years.

Cheers
