Perhaps Straker should be kicked upstairs to General, & someone like Tom
Hanks takes over the SHADO C-in-C vacancy. |
That makes sense - except I don't think Tom Hanks is right - not sure who
is though. By the way - I think people have been rather unkind to your namesake George Lazenby in regards to Bond films - they see that he did one movie and think he must have been awful - truth is the movie he did broke the mould in that Bond got married and it had a tragic ending, hardly George's fault. He was of course blamed and Sean Connery came back for the next one, but I think George was better than Sean (not so stiff and wooden), and Roger (not so fey and camp). Tim was flat, but Pierce is superb. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin Lazenby" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2003 6:27 AM Subject: [SHADO] UFO film. > Perhaps Straker should be kicked upstairs to General, & someone like Tom > Hanks takes over the SHADO C-in-C vacancy. > > > > > > Your use of Yahoo! No, no, no, no, no!!!! (And much as I LOVE Harrison Ford I'm not sure I see
him in Straker's pants either....) "Perhaps Straker should be kicked upstairs to General, & someone like Tom Hanks takes over the SHADO C-in-C vacancy." |

I'd just like to say this for the record. If anyones gonna 'kick' Straker upstairs they'll have to go through me first! Captain Kirk always loathed the idea of promotion and who can blame him! There have been numerous occasions when holding a senior position has invited more unwelcome attention froom aliens than you could shake a stick at! (Except, sadly, Henderson!) Personally, I would like to see, if anyone, starring as Commander Straker the georgous and very talented Michael Ironside. If you don't know who this is he has lots of fan sites. You'll soon realise that you do know him after all. Peasants! --------------------------------- Yahoo! Plus - For a better Internet experience [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

He tried to change his image by taking Roy Schieder's role in Seaquest DSV and also by being a 'good' but tough commander in Starship Troopers. But he's always been regarded as a "heavy." I personally would like to see Gary Oldman as Straker. You may protest, but this is an actor who pulled off being Dracula AND Lost in Space's Dr. Smith on film. I think he would do an amazing job. ===== __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - File online, calculators, forms, and more http://tax.yahoo.com |
Bleah. Why are folks suggesting such AWFUL stand-ins to play Straker?
Michael Ironside (old baldylocks - as if he had any charisma!), Gary Oldman (another truly ugly actor) - who's next - John Malkovitch? Please! Straker was nice to look at as well as being a charismatic and complicated leader-type. If we have to consider a younger Straker-like figure, let's kick Straker upstairs into Henderson's spot (which gives ed Bishop the chance to still play Straker) and choose someone less ugly and more talented for the new C in C. Complicated and tough doesn't mean ugly! Pam |

Thanks for NOT suggesting Ernie Borgnine, (Vic Tayback is dead) or David
Lander as possible Straker fill-ins (vbg)! There has got to be someone who can act and doesn't get arrested for public ugliness available to a UFO's movie's new SHADO C in C!! Pam |

> That makes sense - except I don't think Tom Hanks is right - not sure who > is though. > Tom Hanks might actually be a fan of UFO. He definitely was a fan of Firelball XL-5 as a kid. A few years ago on the old FAB-UFO list somebody mentioned that Tom Hanks commented about UFO when he saw photos from the show in somebody's office when he took a tour of McDonnel-Douglas(now Boeing). I loaned a co-worker a VHS copy of the first two eps
of UFO from the DVDs so he could see the show for the first time. He's a little younger than I and didn't see it in its first run--and had never heard it. His comments so far are interesting... He was suprised that after the rapid-fire collage of scenes (which he asked, why did they keep flashing "1980" all the time??) of the theme song, the show moved very slowly. He said the pilot of Skydiver was practically robotic--which I have to agree with. He said that the SFX was nearly identical to the "Thunderbirds"---then I told him what the connection was. (Which brings up a question of my own...Why wasn't Derek Meddings retained to do the SFX for Space: 1999?) The purple wigs really had him scratching his head. He asked if they were 'friendly aliens' assisting SHADO? And then wondered if they had to remove the wigs to pay their respects to a national anthem or in rememberance..? Interesting.. The concept of the aliends harvesting organs struck him as innovative and pretty grisly, considering the year it was made, foreshadowing X-File type stuff 20 years later. Intereesting observations, eh? JF ===== __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - File online, calculators, forms, and more http://tax.yahoo.com |
IIRC, he went on to do Bond and Johnson became available.

No, they would not have to remove the wigs - LOLOL! Women are not required to remove their cover for the national anthem. I just watched an episode of Boomtown on NBC this evening, and the actor
playing the D.A., David McNorris, was a nearly dead ringer for Eb Bishop to me....and he could act! Maybe he's the man to fill the boots/nehru jacket of Staker! Ken |

Hi folks,
I've been following this debate for a while and the thought just struck me: Why not get Ed harris to play the part of Straker? He can be Mr Ice Cube when he has to, can act well and has great stage presence. What's not to like? Tom Bryant |

Now that's interesting about the actor David McNorris on Boomtown - all of

Word is Boomtown is on the choping block so he may be free soon. I don't know if he has the presence to play Straker. Like most people, I haven't liked Boomtown. It just doesn't grab me.

The problem with casting either Ironside or Oldman is they both are type cast
as "villains" in films. The people casting a film will go for actor type cast as a "hero". James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
