Hi all,

Here is an interesting article (with illustrations) about
what an updated UFO movie might look like:

Most of it looks good (I always felt the UFOs themselves could stand a little improvement).

I must say, however, that I don't care for the new Skydiver. It's always been one of my favorite Anderson designs, and the new design looks comparatively undramatic.

Agreed. The new SkyDiver looks awful. Considering how, in the recent updated versions of Battlestar Galactica and Thunderbirds, the trademark/iconicships from same were mostly updated but still recognisable, you'd have thought SkyDiver would have looked somewhat the same.

Not to keen on the new UFO concept - it looks like a very standard
pulp sci-fi "flying saucer". I really like the interceptor, though.
It has a slightly insectoid look that I find quite appealing.

Yes, I always find the spectacle of Thunderbird 1 doing an
airborne hairpin turn quite amusing.

Yes - the way spacecraft flying in space behave like jet fighters in air is
particularly annoying in SF series/movies. much the same as a nearby
explosion causing the space craft to shudder or suffer damage from
shockwaves as if it was a sub marine is affected by a depth charge. Not to
mention the sound effects accompanying said explosions.

I hope they get this sorted out if the movie goes ahead, and all future SF
movies/series get it right too.

Not too bad. I also like the new Interceptor, especially
the thrust jets at the front. Every time I see SF craft
like this (eg BSG fighters), I can't help wondering how
the hell they are supposed to turn! Of course, they need
them on the top and bottom, too, or a vectoring main
thruster.

OT, but the only space flight sim I've ever played that
was 'realistic' in this sense was called I-Wars, which
required you to turn the craft around in order to slow
down, rather than just cutting thrust. Newton's Laws
obviously pass most flight sim authors by. ;)

I hope the weaponry on The UFO Interceptors is better - just having 1
missile to destroy an UFO would and can put you in an disadvantage against
multiple targets -- Glenn

The best sci-fi treatment of blast damage in space I've seen is early
Blake's 7, where the explosions outside peppered the ship with debris,
which punctured the outer skin.

Get it right? What happened to suspension of disbelief? Dramatic licence?Would you honestly prefer silence during an explosion and no shockwaves?

Seriously?

As an old model-maker, I agree!

I tend to agree. There's something about good modelwork that always looks impressive on the screen. At least to me. CGI has its points, but it's never been able to compare with, say, that impressive shot of the Phoenix under construction in its launch bay in DOPPELGANGER.

I completely agree.  I think even very basic miniatures are superior to the best CGI.  CGI may look great, but I do appreciate the craftsmanship of miniatures.  To me they are like fine art from a museum, where as CGI Itend to view more as a manufactured product.
I am actually right now shooting the miniatures I made for a "no-budget" independent film, so maybe I'm a little biased ;)  You hear that Gerry, hire me and we can go to work on a feature length Stingray film!! :)
