With Granada taking over from Carlton in connection with the rights to all of the important Gerry Anderson shows, surely this must include the probable release of UFO in High Definition DVD when this hits consumers in the next year or so.The new Captain Scarlet is being made with
a High Definition DVD release in mind. And if you think the UFO DVD,s could,nt be improved on think again. The live action footage on UFO was shot on 35mm film, and with good reason.Film stock has always been the medium of choice for professionals due to its ability to produce highly detailed images.High definition video is of course breaking into professional use,but film is generally preferred not only for its defintion but also for other characteristics that make the images feel alive in a way video cannot. For the special effects on UFO a 16mm Mitchelll camera was used by Derek Meddings team. This is still professional film stock capable of very high detailed images. Even 8mm film when I used it back in 1974 produced fantastic quality shots, far better than any DVD image even on a progressive scan monitor, and that is very good. If you,ve happened to see the High Definition titles already released like Coral Reef Adventure,Journey into Amazing Caves and Amazon played through Microsoft's Windows Media 9 Series DVD player software you,ll get an idea of what to expect from Granada when they surely release UFO and other Anderson series in High Definition DVD. Can't wait. Mark UK [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Sorry, but this will remain a dream
even for the distant future. Firstly it's doubtful that the U.K. will adopt High Definition TV anytime soon, if ever. Secondly the recent merger ['absorption' would be a more accurate description] of Carlton and Granada is bad news fr fans of archive TV. Don't expect anymore complete restoration work on any TV shows released by Granada Ventures, as the person who really pushed for these kind of things has been made redundant. We're lucky to have got UFO, etc, completely restored for standard DVD. The reason NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET is being made in HD is because the U.S.A. and Japan have HD TV. The same reason Gerry made STINGRAY, THUNDERBIRDS, etc, in colour:because the U.S. had colour TV before Britain. --- In [hidden email], 'Mark Davies' <aonq79@d...> wrote: > With Granada taking over from Carlton in connection with the rights to all of the important Gerry Anderson shows, surely this must include the probable release of UFO in High Definition DVD when this hits consumers in the next year or so.The new Captain Scarlet is being made with > a High Definition DVD release in mind. > > And if you think the UFO DVD,s could,nt be improved on think again. The live action footage on UFO was shot on 35mm film, and with good reason.Film stock has always been the medium of choice for professionals due to its ability to produce highly detailed > images.High definition video is of course breaking into professional use,but film is generally preferred not only for its defintion but also for other characteristics that make the images feel alive in a way video cannot. > > Can't wait. > > Mark UK > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
