UFO still being broadcast in HDTV on Dish Network

Hi all,

One of my coworkers just got a new Dish Network satellite antenna
to go with his HDTV set, and came by to tell me that he saw
UFO in the program guide. And sure enough, I see that it is
still being shown on Family Room HD (channel 9486), 4 times
a day (!). Tonights episode is A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES, and
will be repeated 3 times in the following 24 hours:

I'm surprised that we don't see more people reporting this.
Does nobody have a Dish antenna and an HDTV? (I know
that I have neither!)

I asked my coworker to watch it and see if he thinks it
is really in HDTV, or merely upscaled from the DVDs...

I believe it is really in HD, just the same like Space: 1999 was. Shall we
all get the money for dish and receiver, so someone can capture the
episodes? : )

I just did some quick research, and it does appear to be "possible" to
extract the HDTV content off of the Dish Network DVR, however it would
require some special equipment, as the USB port does not allow you
to connect an external hard drive and download content (and the content
on the hard drive is encrypted, so you need to do more than pull the
hard drive out and plug it into your computer).

So this is more complicated that my just lending a USB external
drive to my coworker... :-(

Ouch! I guess we will have to be patient and wait for official discs with HD
UFO. On the bright side, we now have something big to hope for!

HD, widescreen, digital TV are all going to prove to be extremely
confusing for the average US "consumer". For example, digital TV does
not necessarily mean widescreen or HD.

Perhaps the confusion is intended so that everyone rushes out to buy TVs.

Remember, global TV chaos is what the Aliens want! With a 500 channel
universe it gives them even more places to hide.

Probably so! Although one can benefit from HDTV signals without
actually buying an HDTV -- I recently got a Comcast HD receiver box,
and it makes my 20-year old Sony Trinitron look better than ever! Now
my local channels look as good (or better) than DVD, and I can watch
the widescreen (letterboxed) versions of shows that are cropped
on the old channels. Comcast advertises that you need to have an HDTV
to use their HD box, but this isn't true, as the box downconverts
to standard definition through the composite and s-video outputs.
Best extra $5/month I've spent on cable...

Sorry, I've gone off-topic... but one thing I've noticed is that if
you're going to get HDTV, you're going to need to get a bigger
screen than you used to have, so that the old 4:3 aspect ratio
programs such as UFO will be big enough with the black bars
on the sides.

HD TV is still pretty primitive though as far as user knowledge goes.

I have the screen (small 37" LCD, 1020i) and the service but everyone
looks wider now (the space between Oprah's eyes is even worse).

I wonder if she knows about this.

UFO looks terrific on it.

I got roomates that like to watch all the standard 4:3 programs on widescreen. Everybody looks so fat and wide, yet they don't seem to mind....

Yes Dave, I meant to say 1080i. I should be more awake and
proofread before I post. I sent a follow-up post making the
correction. Actually, in Paul's case, if he's from a country that
was using the PAL broadcast standard, his mention of 1020i would be
correct. As I said, I need to be more awake when I post. Sorry for
the confusion (my bad).

I personally don't like stretching 4:3 to fit either. I'd prefer
the black (or grey) bars on either side.

Actually, I'm over 40 and also fat and wide.

It makes me feel sort of normal-looking. That is, of course, before I
venture out of my Mom's basement and into the big blue room.
