UFO theame in Wallace and gromit.

keith costello

Hi,

Watching tonights 'Wallace and gromit world of inventions - episode 6 - A to B' in the UK on BBC 1, and heard a large chunk of the UFO title music in the background of the segment about laser propulsion flying saucer technology.

I just saw this -- the proposed flying saucer tech (which they claim could
be a mode of transportation in 15 years) looks quite similar to our UFOs!

If you're in the UK, this link might work for you:

Otherwise, there is always the Usenet... ;-)

Oh, and it's going to drive me crazy, but there is a piece of music in the
flying saucer segment that I can't recall where it's from... I know the
Barry Gray UFO theme (of course) and also "Planet Claire" from the B-52's,
but if anyone knows what the *other* piece of music is from, please remind me...
(might be something from Laurie Johnson, who did the music for the Avengers)

Re: UFO theame in Wallace and gromit.

Hi,

What the man in the clip didn't mention is that the cone needs to be spin stabilised for the whole duration to function at all and you can see him spinning up the disc with an electric motor and a friction disc (er. motive power to achieve this? and also the consequential sympathetic inertial coupling, not to mention the negative force (de-spun) required to keep any central section static in 3D space). Also, a directed laser angle of anything over 20 deg, and the upwards momentum is lost, and the laser power requirement goes through the roof. It takes high-school math to work out that this whole conept is a joke (in atmosphere).

He also doesn't explain or mention this to anyone not in the know, and the whole project is viewed as a circus side-show by those in the prop industry. The whole concept is hugely inefficient, doesn't allow cross-overs, vulnerable due to levels of humidity, temperature, particulates, huge necessary ground/power infrastructure, power loss and a whole host of show-stoppers invalidates his frankly daft project, and explains why this project and video clips are used as laughing fodder at Christmas parties at places such as Lockheed and Rocketdyne...

...strangely, his budget was curtailed and cancelled a few years back.

BTW, you can keep a ping-pong ball suspended in mid-air with an air or water jet for hours/days... the underlying dynamics of a quasi-stationary sphere in air being very different...

Best to all,

G

PS. Oh, the music is from James Bond (composer/s Monty Norman/John Barry) this particular music clips is used in a quite a few of the films :)

It's the John Barry "007 Theme" (as opposed to "The James Bond Theme)
Used in quite a few Bond movies.

It's one of the variations of John Barry's "007" a secondary James Bond theme used and re-used in a number of the EON Productions James Bond movies.

Marc,

the track is called "007". You can find it on the soundtracks "From Russia with Love" and "Thunderball" (slightly different) both by John Barry.

Also on the "Diamonds are Forever" soundtrack under the title "To Hell With Blofeld," and various other John Barry-scored Bond soundtracks under different names. I can't swear to it, but I'm feeling like I don't recall it being used for any Non-Connery Bond, though.

Do you mean this piece?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-5f8IWXCTI

If so, it's John Barry's 007 Theme - the title not to be confused (as it often is) with the James Bond Theme.
It was first used in From Russia With Love during the attack on the Gypsy camp and reappeared in a few other Bond films in different recordings,

Regards
John

Thanks to everyone who responded! (and sorry to everyone else for bringing
up something off-topic).  My James Bond knowledge isn't nearly as good
as my UFO knowledge... :-)

It's about a 30 MB download, which I derived from a 750 MB download...

It's just a few minutes... certainly I could have reduced the resolution
or the bitrate to reduce the file size, but it was just something I rushed
out... and these days, I'm not sure that I would even consider 30 mb that
large of a file (?)

Hi Marc,

not wishing to offend, but as someone who until very shortly ago had a mere analogue modem line giving a measly 33kbs in download with no chance at getting anything better I can only say not to assume - for the generally cited reasons with regard to that word. :-)

Many, very very many people are still on modem lines or very meagre DSL or LAN accesses (1024 kbs which in reality means much less usually).

Not everyone lives in urban, well-provided regions, not in Europe and as I have reason knowing also not in the USA.

Cheers

True, and if this was an "important" video that I was planning on making
part of my UFO Series Home Page, then I would have done the extra work to
make the file smaller.  :-)

The tune was used in a non-Connery Bond – “Moonraker”  (Roger Moore) in the speedboat sequence...
