Has anyone noticed the similarity between UFO and
Torchwood - top secret clandestine organisation
dedicated to protecting humankind from alien
invasion?

If this is what I think it is, there were a few posts about it a few
months ago. Where I am, we didn't get to see Torchwood.

Oh wait, I just Googled, and this is not the short-lived US show I
thought it was.

Sounds good, but it's not UFO.

So far, therefore, as the public profession of magic has been one of the roads by which men have passed to supreme power, it has contributed to emancipate mankind from the thraldom of tradition and to elevate them into a larger, freer life, with a broader outlook on the world. This is no small service rendered to humanity. And when we remember further that in another direction magic has paved the way for science, we are forced to admit that if the black arts has done much evil, it has also been the source of much good; that if it is the child of error, it has been the mother of freedom and truth.

Sir James George Frazer (1854–1941). The Golden Bough. 1922.

Wasn't Torchwood in Dr Who? Did they make a series from it?

I really liked Dark Skies (1996 I think) which was produced in the US and
only lasted one season. I felt it was a suitable 'child' of the UFO idea of
bad aliens and trying to stop them - in the vein of The Invaders, UFO and
X-Files. BTW, off topic - I managed to score the entire 14 eps single season
of the 1974 Planet of the Apes series on DVD last night at Future Shop (here
in Canada) - I'd given up hope of ever seeing it available.

P.S. I have three new stories on the SHADO Library, one of which is a
crossover with Stargate

Just to clarify...Torchwood was a spin off from the new Dr Who TV
series from BBC TV...Although this is only on Digital TV (BBC3) in the
UK at the moment. Also Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who!!

If that was the only similarity, you could include a whole slew of
other shows/organisations e.g. Stargate SG-1 (Stargate Command); Dark
Skies (Majestic 12); The Invaders (The Believers); War of the Worlds
(The Blackwood Project); both versions of Captain Scarlet (Spectrum);
not to mention Torchwood's parent show Doctor Who (featured U.N.I.T.,
which gets a couple of mentions on T/w.)
I probably have unintentionally left some out, but you get the idea.
