Upcoming book on Derek Meddings

Hi all,

I see that the Shubrook family is now making
a book about Derek Meddings:

Presumably this will have *some* UFO content...

Is this a rework of the older book, 21st Century Visions?

No, it's a brand new book, and looks like it will be focusing
a lot on the period after Derek worked for Gerry Anderson.
They are also drawing on materials from the Meddings family,
which I don't believe they did for the first book.

By the way, here is the email press release I received about
this book (which does mention UFO):

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear all,

Following the huge success of CENTURY 21 FX UNSEEN UNTOLD (which is
predicted to sell-out at retail by the end of May), we are delighted to
announce the publication of our follow-up book;
SPECIAL EFFECTS SUPERMAN: THE ART AND EFFECTS OF DEREK MEDDINGS

This book is now available to order at www.meddingsbook.com

We have worked closely with Derek's family, who have provided us with
thousands of photos from his personal archive.
The book follows his career, covering; The Gerry Anderson Years,
Moonraker, Superman I & II, Batman, The Spy Who Loved Me, Santa Claus
The Movie, Goldeneye and many more...
It features original sketches and illustrations from Stingray,
Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 and UFO as well as over 500
photographs from the above films.

We hope this book is a must have for any fan and thank you in advance
for your support.

All the best,
Martin Shubrook
Paul Shubrook
Elliott Meddings
Noah Meddings

By coincidence, I was recently reading a biography on Derek Meddings
at http://www.supermarionation.tv and was surprised at one detail I
had not seen mentioned anywhere else:

"Although it cannot be proven, there is a fair chance that working
with volatile materials in the course of his special effects career
have contributed to his terminal illness. His mentor, Les Bowie, died
of cancer at the same age."

I wonder if the burning petrol-based explosions he did so many of may
have had an involvment, as virtually every Anderson show he did had
something blowing up, and he was usually directly involved in those shots.

I look forward to the book, if I ever had a childhood hero, it was Derek.

SHADO
I wouldn't be surprised if contact with the skin by some of these materials could cause cancer as well. Sad thing.
