Why were these characters "written out" of the series ?

Colonel Freeman and Lieutenant Ellis ?

Were they written out, or did they choose not to continue on in the
series ? And why ?

They weren't really 'written out' - in the sense that their absence
(the characters, that is) from the later episodes is never actually
explained.

The 26 episodes were filmed in two 'batches', at two studios; Freeman
and Ellis are absent from the last 9 episodes which were filmed at
Pinewood, a few months after the first 17.

I can't remember why Gabrielle Drake left, but I believe that George
Sewell had committed to the ITV series Special Branch, in which he had
the lead role.

Pity though, along with Straker, Freeman (and Henderson) was my
favorite character... maybe due to the fact that in the french
version he is refred to as being, like me, a Canadian !
