Would UFO work in CGI?

aafsweb

Captain Scarlet starts on TV tomorrow morning and it set me
wondering if UFO would be good as a CGI series. Perhaps it could be
the first big budget CGI series for Adults? Any comments?

Re: Would UFO work in CGI?

UFO was conceived as a live action show and I think it should always
remain as one. I'm not sure about any new update of UFO, but I'd
sure like to see a fan film of it.

I read an interesting piece by Gerry Anderson concerning the new
Captain Scarlet. He said he'd love to do a CGI Thunderbirds, and
(no surprise) he hates the recent Thunderbirds movie. However, he
said he really enjoyed Team America: World Police and thought it was
a great tribute to his shows, adding further "Trey Parker has said
he went through hell trying to make it, I sympathise with him, but
he made a terrific movie".

Back to UFO, I noticed that at the beginning of "Reflections In the
Water" that the island the cargo ship passes looks a lot like Tracy
Island. Hmmm, conspiracy theory anyone?

I don't know if a CGI UFO would work or not. But if one was ever made, I would hope the appearance of the characters would be based on the actors of the original series. Perhaps most won't agree with me, but I would be more interested in a CGI continuation of the old series, rather than a complete CGI revamp. For example, in addition to being a UFO fan, I was very fond of the original Battlestar Galactica. And while the new Battlestar Galactica may be considered better than the original by some folks, I am having trouble getting interested in it (as I watch it right now). So if someone is going to make a CGI UFO, I think it would be better received by old farts like me if the characters look familiar. Maybe It's because UFO ended before it's time (1 season) that I would like to see more of the 'same'. But that's just me.

Good point regarding making a remake a continuation, but if such a project was undertaken, the powers that be in charge would most likely take the view that people wouldn't really remember the series' ending, so would start again from the beginning. An idea that occurs to me is that after a couple of episodes to establish the series and its format, events from the original series can be referred to as taking place in the new series past. In this way, the new version of Captain Scarlet could mention Mysteron attempts from the original series, for example. This would be a cheap way of giving the new series more of a backstory.

What you propose probably makes more sense than rehashing the entire series from the beginning. Would't seem very futuristic for the series to still be taking place in 1980 anyway! I wouldn't even mind the look of the show changing substantially from the original. I just think it would be nice if the original (and older) characters could still play significant parts in any new cgi production. The older and familiar characters would draw us 'older folks' to the show, yet there would be younger characters to interest a newer and younger audience. What we REALLY need is a way to go back in time. Someone could change the past so there are about 5 more seasons of the original series. A bit off topic, but I see they are releasing the "Greatest American Hero" series on DVD. I always got a laugh out of that one. I wonder if it ever played in the UK...

So that means the show would be set in the 1980s? Or would you come up with
some storyline where they were all flash-frozen until the 21st century and
that's why they haven't aged?

I don't know, Dennis. I'd just really like to see the old characters somehow involved, but not enough to spend the time to think through the whole premise. I'm sure others here would come up with better ideas than I could think of... : )
