Recorded roughly three years after his appearances in UFO, Anthony Chinn had a small part as General Chiang, head of (Chinese-owned) Moonbase 4, seen here in teleconference with his counterpart on Moonbase 3. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jgibbon/mb3.jpg Interestingly, despite being set about twenty years further into the future, Moonbase 3 is a fair bit less ambitious in projected technology and 'futuristic appearance' than UFO. As a somewhat off-topic aside, while watching Moonbase 3 tonight, I experienced a terrible feeling of being 'cheated out of the future'. One of the characters, a chap in his early 40s, is asked when he was born. He replies '1961'. I suddenly remembered watching that bit of dialogue as a 13yr old, and thinking wow - this grey-haired middle-aged bloke is a year younger than me! When I'm his age we'll have bases on the moon with artificial gravity, automatic speech-operated typewriters, huge computers with flashing lights, and space travel will be commonplace! Well, here I am, 42 years old and it all just never happened. Bummer! Seriously, I feel a bit depressed. I mean I'm grateful for mobile phones, widescreen TVs, DVD players and PDAs, but I want to go to the Moon. James |
And James --- there are days when I wish you were there. ;-)
But I do know what you mean....the future is less than fantastic. :( Anthony ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Gibbon" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2002 8:09 PM Subject: [SHADO] a familiar face in 'Moonbase 3' ><snip> > Well, here I am, 42 years old and it all just never happened. > Bummer! Gee, I wish you had posted this about Anthony Chinn about a week ago before I
had to send my latest edition of Video Raiders in to be printed in SHADOFILE. Oh well, that another one to write down for future use. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I watched Rollerball last night (the original), and Anthony Chinn appeared
in that, together with Shane Rimmer! >>Gee, I wish you had posted this about Anthony Chinn about a week ago >>before I >had to send my latest edition of Video Raiders in to be printed in >SHADOFILE. > Oh well, that another one to write down for future use. > >James K. > > >[Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > > > > >Your use of Yahoo! I saw "Moonbase 3" on the Sci-Fi Channel some years back and while it was cool to actually see the show, it didn't exactly bowl me over. And hey, as to the future being a letdown, I can remember an elementary school science book I had (published, I think, in the late 50s, early 60s and still in use in the 70s!) which ended with a page asking the student "...where will you be in 1970 (I think)? Flying an atomic-powered carpet over the Taj Mahal or leading the first expedition to Mars..." Hey, even at 10 years old, I thought that was pretty far-fetched! Brian:
You and I caught "Moonbase 3" at the same time (and Lord don't I wish the Sci-Fi Channel would go back to running more eclectic stuff like that). I thought the show wasn't too bad. When I was growing up I was reading science-fiction which had families owning their own personal helicopters. Given the way most people handle ground transportation I'm privately relieved we've avoided that particular scenario! I still miss the personal jet packs, though! What a letdown.
