dead links

anthonyappleyard <MCLSSAA2@fs2.mt.umist.ac.uk>
I have been going through my list of UFO-related links, and I have found that
these seem to be 404:-

http://users.ipa.net/~yuchtar/SHADAIR.html :: UFO - SHADAIR HQ
http://www.cnw.com/~mmartin/temp/ :: Index of Marc Martin's /~mmartin/temp
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1470/marspers.html :: ufo mars operatives
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1470/thecast.html :: ufocast
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1470/tubby.html :: ufo mix colombo
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1470/ufotvlis.html :: UFOtvmaillist
http://www.geocities.com/~tpring/ :: Sci-Fi Follies (some UFO-related humour
here)
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucgagrw/UFO/UFOpage.html :: The UFO page

and even the old FAB-UFO list archives, it seems:-

http://www.lists.pipex.com/cgi-bin/listproc/digests?list=FAB-UFO :: The FAB-
UFO List Archive

Are any of these pages merely at other addresses?

How is Yuchtar? The last message from her was on 30 June 2001.

Well, that's the unfortunate reality of the web... sites move, and
eventually they disappear. Someday my "ufoseries.com" will be
gone too... (horrors!)

That was still working just 2 days ago, so perhaps it'll come back.

Yuchtar is no longer subscribed to this list. People come
& go as their time & interests dictate...

On second look, I see it never went away. It's just that your
URL is several years out of date. The correct URL is:

http://www.lists.pipex.com/cgi-bin/digests?list=fab-ufo

The library's home is located at http://www.shadolibrary.org/ - follow the

That's exactly the link which has been giving me nothing
but a background image, no links.

RE: dead links

SHADO Librarian
Rob - I just rechecked the validation on the page and it shows no errors
online through W3C.
Only the background showing would normally indicate a tables issue in NSN,
but if so, it's not showing as an error. Knowing how the page is conformed,
turning Javascript OFF might be a better test. (Page looks ugly in NSN that
way, though - the CSS turns off.)

Joyce,

It's working fine for me. Try hitting 'refresh', as
there may be a bad copy in your cache.
If that doesn't work, do you have javascript enabled
in your browser? - Deborah uses quite a lot on her
site. If that means nothing to you, contact me
directly (ie off-list) letting me know what
operating system (eg Windows98, MacOS 7.6, Linux etc)
and which browser (and version) you use, and I'll try
and help. If you have more than one browser installed,
it'd be worth trying (one of) the other(s).

On my UFO website, I've specifically avoided things like java, javascript,
and CSS, just because I've noted that they cause a lot of trouble
with various browsers. I must have 5 different browsers on my computer,
and with some sites, I have to cycle through several of them to find
one which works! Of course, I'm using a Mac, which makes things more
difficult for me, since most people design their sites to only work
on Windows machines...

RE: dead links

SHADO Librarian
I know this is off topic but we're all using computers and on the web -
I've found that pages were you have to cycle through browsers (Yes, five is
about a normal number of browsers for people seriously into web design) to
find one that works invariably means the page in question has bad code. MSIE
is the most forgiving of bad code. NSN 4+ less so, Opera shows every flaw.
NSN 6 is a cludge - breaks at good code.
Theoretically, if a page validates (meaning it conforms 100% with the rules
set down for the version of HTML being used) it should be accessible to any
browser out there - it's not guaranteed to look good, but it should show up.

Several people have complained they can't get into the Library even though
the code validates. Unfortunately, the people who can't get in can't tell me
what was broken. It could be a server problem, but there's no indication
from the hosting service of the servers being down at the problem times.
When the first complaints came in, I contacted the host to see if there was
something wrong, their investigation showed nothing - the site was there and
the server-side programming was working properly.
There is also the possibility (for those who kept coming up with the 'DNS
not found' error) that their own ISP was having problems accessing services
out of certain Internet nodes. (About two years ago the entire east coast of
the US was unavailable to the west coast due to a major node being down for
about 6 hours.)

As I cannot replicate the various problems reported at the Library, I can't
fix them.
