The French UFO DVDs are the only ones which have a poor transfer.
All of the other DVD sets use the new remastering for all 26
episodes. You can then choose base on whether you want PAL
or NTSC, or decide based on special features, which are different
on all the sets. There are UFO DVD sets from the UK, USA,
Italy, Japan, France, Germany... and someday there may even
be one from Australia.

My favorite is the USA set, as it runs at the same speed as
the 35mm film, plus it has 2 extra commentaries. But the
UK set is also impressive, as is the Italian set.

This may be a bit OT, but has anyone DVD's by A&E?
I have S-1999 DVD's and I'm having tremendous trouble running them. Anyone
else experienced any problems with A&E's DVDs?

Re: dvd's

SHADO
I've got both the A&E DVDs of Space:1999, and UFO. Only watched the Space DVDs once a long time ago, so don't recall if I had any problems with them. But having played the UFO DVDs much more frequently, the issues I've had with them are still fresh in my mind. When played on an old Audiovox (2001) portable, they were prone to random skipping to different chapters when playing. Copies I made to borrow to a friend in Mexico skipped on her older player also. But the discs play flawlessly on my old (2000) Pioneer player, and my new Polaroid portable. These are the only DVDs I have ever had any issues with, and in MY (limited) experience seem to cause problems in older players only. Also, the discs in question are/were perfectly clean (no scratches or fingerprints). What difficulties are you having with your Space discs?

I find that some eps run okay, (not great but okay), with a tendency to skip
or freeze momentarily. Some eps will run flawlessly to a certain point, then
start getting quirky with sound outages, freezes, and then the player will
crash. I find it always occures at the same spots in the same episodes,
right down to the exact same frame.

Some of the eps I still haven't been able to watch all the way through
because of these problems, even after weeks of trying. In the end I've found
about half of the 12 eps avail on the DVD set are unviewable.

It is so frustrating to try to watch these things that I've finally given
up, even though I'm re-hooked after all these years, and am dying to view
the program again.

RE: dvd's

SHADO
When I copied mine, the problems remained. Which isn't to say that it wouldn't work for someone else... : )

If you have a DVD writer on a PC or Mac, one way around
this may be to 'backup' your A&E discs (and in this case
I consider that as perfectly legitimate (but probably isn't.))
The chances are that your computer will be able to read the
original discs perfectly and then you could try to burn to
either DVD-R or DVD+R blanks (as long as your burner supports
both) to see which plays best on your standalone DVD player.
If you want any help as to suitable software etc., I'm quite
happy to help if you send me an email, off-list (or google,
of course!)

Wow, this is the first time I've heard of such problems.

I've not had any such problems with my A&E UFO DVDs... and I've watched
all 26 episodes several times. My player was a 1997 Sony... I guess
I should check them out on my 2005 Pioneer...

RE: dvd's

SHADO
Hi Rob,

Re-encoding was involved, using CloneDVD2, to fit a single layer blank, but the problems still persisted. Not sure if the problems were in the same spots as on the originals, as I never compared them side by side. I had never mentioned having problems before, as the discs played flawlessly in some players, but had issues in others. If they would have messed up in ALL of my players, I would have mentioned it a long time ago. A bit off topic, but I am on my 3rd set of Outer Limits (original series) season 2 discs, and still can't play 2 of the episodes at all, in any player. Finally got tired of mailing them back, and just kept the third defective set. Kind of annoying, because one of the Eps that won't play is one with Leonard Nimoy. Tried copying the bad disc using both DVD shrink, and CloneDVD2, and neither would copy at all (kept getting errors).

Jeff,
Did you do a 'straight' copy, or was any re-encoding
involved? If the problem is an original encoding error
on that batch of discs, then I'd guess that something
like DVD-Shrink might work as it would have to re-encode,
in order to fit onto one (single layer) blank, which
should fix any errors of that type (but will also reduce
video quality to some extent.)
As Marc said, I've not heard of problems with the A&E
set before, so this is purely guesswork..
Regards,

Dave,

I fully understand your frustration. Have you tried the discs on more than 1 player? As I stated, my UFO discs gave me problems on some players, but not others.

My next step.
I figure on stopping by Best Buy and asking the sales rep to letting me
slip the disks in some of their display models at random and see how they
play....

Re: dvd's

Claudia Bÿffffffffffe1ez Juÿffffffffffe1rez
Dear Dave,

I think your choice is the best, because Jeff´s DVDs copies (the ones he gave to me like a present) don´t skip in my old (2004) DVD player (Samsumg) instead stop for a lapse between 5 and 15 minutes, but in other players they work OK. My player do the same (at times, its depends on its mood) with another copies and originals DVDs, so I have reached the conclusion that the problem is the $39 special.

Good Luck!

Claudia (from Mexico)
