Marc,
Sorry that I didn't get back with all of you about Flight Path. I went away with my hubby to celebrate our anniversary and renew our vows. I don't know why, but it rather took my mind off of UFO. Now that I'm back home, I'll let you know what I think of Flight Path and Exposed. First, Flight Path. I felt sorry for the Roper character, but I have a problem with how the aliens got to him. It took Straker some time to find out his weakness (his wife), and they want us to believe that the aliens had a better handle on it than his boss? Yeah, sure. Look, these are aliens. They don't understand our social setup any more than we understand theirs. Taking over the mind of the medical tech wouldn't guarantee them understanding any better. Come on, society is a complex concept. Anyway, I liked how Straker handled everything and never could understand how Alec thought he'd be helping Roper to send him off without Straker to keep an eye on him. Stupid move, Alec! As usual, the episode ended on a low note with Roper dying. I suppose they had to do something with him, since SHADO certainly would have problems trusting him again. Second, Exposed. This is a good episode, and as you said, Marc, the characters start to really gel beginning with this one. Straker is hilarious as the puppetmaster throughout, although I agree with the guy who said the fan scene was a bit weird. My problem is one of time. I know Janna went to get those back papers for Paul, but who can get their hands on daily issues as far back as these had to be? Come on, that accident took place in 1970 before SHADO even started. This episode, from the look of HQ, took place in 1980 or thereafter, since everything is obviously up and running. I defy anyone to find back issues of a daily paper from ten years back. Most city newspapers don't carry copies from last month, let alone ten years ago. Anyway, it's not a big "issue" (if I may pun), but it catches my attention every time as implausible. Naturally, Jackson steals the show with his scene aboard the plane. So sneaky. You can't help but love him. And Straker in his cute blue suit is always a treat to watch. Why didn't they ever film him in that one again, I wonder? All libraries in the US have microfiche copies of local newspaper back issues, as do most newspaper publishers. They are referred to as "Morgue" copies. AT |

Anthony is right. When I was doing my credit list for Gabrielle
several years ago I got to see newpaper articles on Mircofletche that went back to her work in the 1974 series The Brothers. That was more than 10 years. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Yes, that's true, and Roper's death is a bit of an easy ending really. What would have happened if he'd survived? A Court Martial, I imagine. But I find it most unsatisfactory that Roper is sent out to deal with an incoming UFO on his own - he's under tremendous stress and not in particularly good shape. I think that SHADO would have deployed several of their fittest and finest shoulder-launched missile marksmen! James |

I've done a lot of research over the years, and I can tell you that microfiche copies don't look anything like newspapers. It's a little thing. But I suppose because I HAVE done research and know the score, it glares out at me. Maybe Gerry's writers didn't know that newspapers can't be had that far back. Or maybe they just didn't care. Anyway, I love the episode. I hate to beat this poor dead horse, but don't you think that SHADO could re-print a newspaper? I don't think it would be that difficult for an organization that has a Moonbase to have a print shop that can create fake newspapers. Just a thought. ;-) Anthony (US) --------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise Felt" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 2:35 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] episode discussions > James K. wrote: > > > Anthony is right. Well Roper did volunteer for the mission... he was feeling very guilty
about what transpired as a result of his actions. BUT, now that you mention it (and for some reason I hadn't thought of it in the past) they should have sent more than *one* person. Then again, if they had sent more than one person, it wouldn't have made for such a climactic and suspenseful ending!! Denise,
probably the writers weren't up to speed on the keeping of back issue of newspaper. Before microfette newspapers actually kept real copies of back issues. And in the case of some smaller papers like one we have in the county where I live they still do of some of the older issues. Found this out when had to do some research on a persons er... criminal record. You see people searching for information in the old newspaper back issues a lot in old movies and I guess this is where the writers got the idea and didn't know time had past this by. James K. Newspapers used to keep copies of every paper they published in some sort of archive. Some were still going back and putting them on film as late as the early 90s.... TAE |

Yes, but my point wasn't whether or not Roper deserved it or not, but whether it was clever from a tactical point of view. James |

Wouldn't that send alarms, though? If Foster knew the papers would be on
microfiche wouldn't her showing up with full hardcopy be suspicious? Besides, old newspapers are extremely delicate and yellow from the acid in the paper. The papers Janna brought were like new and Foster didn't notice. - Or maybe that mystery added to his need to get to the bottom of things? -----Original Message----- From: Anthony D [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 12:11 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] episode discussions Denise: I hate to beat this poor dead horse, but don't you think that SHADO could re-print a newspaper? Yes, but my point wasn't whether or not Roper deserved it or not, but whether it was clever from a tactical point of view. James I have to laugh when I see things like this. Shows like UFO and Star Trek do what is good from a DRAMATIC standpoint, first, last and always. Even JAG, which used to pride itself on being realistic, has surended to the "Drama First, Reality Check Later" symdrom. Besides, most writers don't have a military background, so that they don't realize what us vetrans are laughing at them for. Your use of Yahoo!
