I've only seen him as The Master in Doctor Who, but, based
on that, I'd vote no. He seems too soft and doughy to be
Straker. He can be mesmerizing, but never "piercing."

Only seen him with his dodgy American accent in "Demons."
Not impressed there, but the accent is most of the problem.

This I like!

Okay. If I get a vote, I really like the looks of Rupert (although I haven't seen him in anything.) He exudes intense -- which is cool. Also Viggo, although that's a sentimental vote, because I loved his Aragorn. He'd be a bit too angsty for Straker (if that's possible.)
But Damian Lewis doesn't look promising. Sorry, James.

See thats what I'm talking about--when you start changing the color and genders of the characters of the show,it tends to ruin the memory of the show(my personal opinion). Its exactly like how Battlestar Galactica and making Boomer a female and White,Starbuck a female,Adama Puerto Rican. I mentioned this before when I asked Mark a couple of years ago about that particular topic(changing the genders of the characters).Ed Straker shouldnt be an old man-I believe he should be in his forties and carry on the blond hair tradition that has amazed me as well as Strakers cool demeanor! And that goes for all the other characters that were on the show--I would want people who play the UFO characters to eminate the identical aura as the original cast. And thats NOT taking anything away from the people that UFO fans feel should reprise the roles.I value seeing who would have the picks of the characters that I would like to see or choose. We all have our opinions and I'm honored to be in this group to see the many fans that have kept this iconic show alive! By the way--I'm black and not biased against color or gender for the record-just not for re-makes of original shows or movies. Some things youjust cant do like that;for example: Orphan Annie has freakles and Red hair--you cant have a little black girl come in and reprise that role to where its believable.Thats because we all know that Annie had Red Hair and Freakles and was a little white girl.

Paul,
Yes, Poitier would be awesome! And he still looks trim and fit at 83, whichnot many can claim. I'd vote for him as Straker! And probably fall in lovewith him too!! (I remember being shocked at how easy it was to fall in love with an older Connery in Medicine Man!)

Anthony,
I quite agree. I have always hated remakes. They never seem to get what made the original a hit needed to STAY a part of the show! That said, I so totally enjoyed the remake of Star Trek that I'm hopeful that UFO will havea similar miracle. I know some ST fans hated the remake, but I'm a diehard fan myself and I laughed and laughed! Gene would have loved it. So it could happen again -- for UFO this time. We'll all find out one way or the other anyway, won't we? In just about a year's time.

I think I have said it before but it still hold true and that is if its notbroke don't fix it. If as they say the love the original UFO there is noneed to put a new spin on a character by making them a different Ethnic group or different hair color or age or what ever. Since they are going to set this about ten years in the future which is the same amount of time thatthe original UFO was set ahead they can play around with the Tech and vehicle and craft designs and set designs and even costuming to a certain degree. But when they start making any changes to the characters it stops beingUFO.
Oh, Denise, love the sight and stories.

But it is broken, in the sense that the actors, writers
and directors from the original series are dead, or too
old. Also in the sense that the original series wouldn't
work too well as a 2010 feature film.

So it has to be not merely fixed, but remade from scratch.

I disagree with the comment someone made that the new
characters should emanate the same aura as the old ones.
I don't think it's really possible. Straker's aura came
from the expression on Ed Bishop's face, his mannerisms,
the tone of his voice and so on, and whoever plays him
in a new film will have his own aura.

Pierce Brosnan said once that you have to play James Bond
as the man you are, which is why he didn't have the same
aura as Timothy Dalton, who in turn didn't have the same
aura as Roger Moore, and so on. If he had tried to play
it like Connery or Moore, he'd have been a poor
second-best imitation. The same surely applies to the new
UFO cast.

Hi, James!
Good to hear from you! I agree that making a politically correct movie by changing a character to add an ethnic group for commercial impact would hurt the show. And would be a dumb idea. Like Star Trek that came out about the same time, UFO already believed that all races should be involved in anyouter space endeavor, so it should be unnecessary to introduce a new ethnic group. They're pretty much already represented.
I'm so glad that you are enjoying the UFO site! It's been a dream of mine for a while. So, which stories have you been reading? The new Shakespeareones? I'd love to have your feedback on that series. You so often see what others miss.
Take care!

The best time line question I had, had to do with Klingons, how they looked. In the original series, they just had dark make up to make them selves look different. Then in the motion picture, they had the ridges on the forehead. Even the same actors who stared in the original series, brought back on Deep Space 9, had the ridges.

How many people leaned into the TV, when DS9 did a special about time travel back to the Enterprise during the trouble with tribbles episode? When they looked at Worf and question him, those are klingons? :) and gave a questioning look? :)

Yes, I think it's in Survival, when Straker offers Mark Bradley the
Moonbase commander job after Paul Foster is missing presumed dead.
Straker says that racism burned itself out in the '70s, or words to
that effect. Would have been nice.

UFO touches on racism a couple of times. In one of the episodes,
Computer Affair I think, the psychoanalyst examining Bradley casually
comments "I've no liking for you blacks". Bradley doesn't bat an
eyelid, assuming correctly that the shrink is merely trying to get a
reaction from him.
