Yes, it was a rather naive quote, where he says - ".....Racism burned
itself out.... five years ago....."

Just like that, it suddenly fizzled out.

That's as good as his other quote (in 1980 remember) -

What's a civilian mining company doing on the Moon anyway? Everything
useful was taken out of there years ago.....

Bruce,
I think that one may have been in Survival, when Bradley is promoted after Foster is believed dead. Am I right, guys? I haven't seen that episode in a long time. I loved it when Straker told him that! Be sure it will be included in the Quotes page. Thanks!

Sadly, I think racism will be with us for eternity. "STAR TREK" also implied that racism was a thing of the past. How naive!
However, they DID cover racism in a few episodes (notably "Balance Of Terror" and "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield").

I think there's probably more sexism than racism in "UFO", but I reckon some people would disagree with me. I expect that this subject has been covered previously, but I haven't been on the forum very long.

Well, the term he used wasn't EXACTLY the "N" word. It was "negress", not the "N" word.
When I was a kid, we used the term "negroes", and it wasn't meant by us in a derogatory fashion at all, although at times by others I suppose it was.  Perhaps it WAS taken as derogatory by African Americans/Blacks here in the States.  I honestly don't know.  But I have NEVER heard the "N" word used here without being meant derogatorily.

Was the use of the term "negro" originally meant to be used in a derogatoryfashion?  Just curious.

Well, Star Trek is set a long way in the future. I'm sure that racism
is in decline in the big picture, if you compare society in the present
day with 100 years ago. So given the timescale involved, it's not
an unreasonable view.

I think the 'n' word was 'negress', wasn't it? Not the 'n' word
that's usually implied by the term, just to be clear.

I haven't seen that episode for years, but I think he called her
an "enchanting negress". Which by the mores of that time, was
not a denigrating remark.

Yes, everyone was right, but with the way they wrote the episode, with the apology, and not wishing to offend anyone, I just used the phrase 'n word' then saying it.

Of course, we are also as a society way, way more 'touchy' than we ever have been.

I remember several years ago when someone in Washington DC government use the term 'niggardly' (which is COMPLETELY unrelated to the racial slur used against folks with dark skin) and was forced to resign his position - because of the touchiness of the public about a word that was TOTALLY UNRELATED TO A RACIAL SLUR.

I found it incredible, actually, because it illustrated the decline in literacy in the United States of America.

We have become a nation of people who love to be offended, when it is appropriate or when it is not.

Jeffrey,
I don't think the term "negro" was originally mean to be derogatory. It isactually the Spanish word for "black". There is a river in South America called the Rio Negros which means Black River which was so named because itwas so dark in color. There is also a Rio Blanco which means White River.
I don't know about the sexism angle but there did seem to be a prejudice against the military rank of Major. Not how many people you see in SHADOor other services with the rank of Major.

Right you are.

Steve Martin once wrote: "Let's go mambo dogface to the banana patch",
which I thought was extremely insightful - uh-oh, I'm getting happy feet!

Wait - would Steve be a good Straker. Sure, we'd have to suspend
disbelief and willingly ignore the arrow-through-the-head, bunny ears
and gag glasses, but overall I think he's the guy.

Decision, decisions...

Yes, that is correct. BUT, I would like everyone to aware of cat juggling.

What does this have to to with UFO? It's uncertain at this point.

UFO-> Racial remarks
a poster used this remark made by Steve Martin which was wrongly said to have a racial slant to it, just wanted to make a correction. Myself, should also have said, what does this have to do with the current racial thread??

Thanks for the interesting info, Billy!  I was starting to feel guiltyfor having used the word as a child, when I certainly meant no offense.  Used in the same way caucasian is used to denote persons of light skin color.

Just curious.

they also did it when the crew met Abraham Lincoln and used the N word on Uhura, then apologized, she said she was fine.

And who can forget the all important thing that happened in Plato's Stepchildren :)

Sadly, I think racism will be with us for eternity. "STAR TREK" also implied that racism was a thing of the past. How naive!
However, they DID cover racism in a few episodes (notably "Balance Of Terror" and "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" ).

I haven't seen that episode in along time. I loved it when Straker told him that! Be sure it will be included in the Quotes page. Thanks!
Yours,
Denise

Yes, everyone was right, but with the way they wrote the episode, with the apology, and not wishing to offend anyone, I just used the phrase 'n word' then saying it.

I think the 'n' word was 'negress', wasn't it? Not the 'n' word
that's usually implied by the term, just to be clear.

I haven't seen that episode for years, but I think he called her
an "enchanting negress". Which by the mores of that time, was
not a denigrating remark.

Thanks for the interesting info, Billy!  I was starting to feel guiltyfor having used the word as a child, when I certainly meant no offense.  Used in the same way caucasian is used to denote persons of light skin color.

Jeffrey,
I don't think the term "negro" was originally mean to be derogatory. It is actually the Spanish word for "black". There is a river in South America called the Rio Negros which means Black River which was so named because it was so dark in color. There is also a Rio Blanco which means White River.
I don't know about the sexism angle but there did seem to be a prejudice against the military rank of Major. Not how many people you see in SHADO or other services with the rank of Major.

Well, the term he used wasn't EXACTLY the "N" word. It was "negress" , not the "N" word.

ASH Wedge has the character that each delicateness and elegance, and you'll satisfy with it. Just keep in mind, casual tops are like cells.
