"ufoseries.com' new look

Marc Martin
Administrator
Hi all,

One thing that I've been putting off for years is to convert the HTML
code on my "UFO Series Home Page" to something more modern, so that it
looks like it was designed in the last few years rather than 13 years
ago. I've been experimenting around this past weekend, and so far
this is the look that I'm tending towards:

http://ufoseries.com/

Right now, only the front page has been updated, but the idea is to update
the whole site for a consistent look. For example, the sub-pages would
look something like this:

http://ufoseries.com/test.html

Hopefully this won't generate too many complaints!

Marc,

It looks good! Nice work. Personally I would use a darker colour
than the purple you're using for unvisited links though; it looks
a bit too low-contrast and washed-out. Other than that, it's my
favourite sort of site - elegant and simple; not too minimalist
but not cluttered.

Actually I think it does retain a hint of its mid-90s charm, but
that's a good thing.

None from me. That looks great. Definitely an improvement.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - it's your site, and a change is
as good as a rest, so I hear.

Thanks!

I'm not happy with the photos, but I think they're good
enough for me to now work on the sub-pages, and I'll
revisit the photos later.

I suspect that the answer that you're looking for is "Dreamweaver",
although as part of this update I was using all sorts of programs,
including VOBtoMPEG, VirtualDub-MPEG2, Irfanview, Corel Draw,
Corel Photo-Paint, PhotoFiltre, IE, Firefox... plus a couple
Eurostyle fonts. :-)

Hey, real site builders write HTML with a text editor.

What Marc's done is to separate style from content by using an CSS
stylesheet. Using a complicated CMS for his type of site is way overkill.

Heh, heh... yes, the only way that I know of to convert
HTML tables to HTML+CSS is to use a text editor... :-)

So far I've got the home page, the what's new page,
and the movie clips page done...

... but now, I just received the Australian UFO DVD
set, so I'm a bit distracted... :-)

Great effort on the site - I visit it now and again when the 'Eagle
sedatives' wear-off. ;-)

Is your eventual aim to have something akin to the Catacombs in scale
and scope?

I haven't spent much time on the Space:1999 Catacombs site, but
in my brief visit there just a second ago, it appears to be
an encyclopedic reference for all things Space:1999.
I don't really have the time or interest to have
photos and reviews of every piece of UFO merchandise
in existence or cover every aspect of the series, and
this was never my intent. In fact, my original
intent was rather modest -- a UFO episode guide, an
FAQ, some photos, some sound clips, some transcriptions
of interviews, etc.

Mostly I like to add things to my UFO website that I
personally find interesting, and hope that other
UFO fans will find them interesting as well. In some
areas, this may go beyond what the Catacombs provides
(e.g., complete music & effects tracks, script
transcriptions, unreleased Barry Gray music), while in
other areas it falls short (product reviews, episode
analysis). But certainly other people are welcome
to create their own websites to compensate for things I
tend to ignore.

My current goals for my site are rather limited:

-- give website superficial facelift

-- add more publicity photos

-- add more photos/information about
the various UFO DVD releases (Australia,
Italy, Japan, Germany)

-- add more convention videos

-- add more script transcriptions

-- add remaining UFO music & effect track

-- add some photos/information about recent
books of interest to UFO fans (Complete
Book of UFO, Alan Shubrook's new book, etc.)

The problem is, with the limited amount of time
that I spend on the website, it will take me MANY months
for me to complete all of the above, and some of
them may NEVER get done... :-(

Hey, what you've done so far is great. Too many fan site's look like tall
wedding cake's. Your's is very well organized and I still haven't finished going
though all the links yet. It's a terrible thing when Real Life takes one's
time away from Fandom. <sigh>

Wendy - whose ability to anything with software died with a "D" grade in
Basic.
