Marc,
Incidentally, Gerry still thinks of UFO as taking place in 1985. He spoke
of it in May at the Fanderson Con, and it threw me at the time.

Re: 1984?

My impression is that the wine was supposed to be one year old and that the
wine scene is set in 1985. The opening scenes of the series are 1980, (in
the Rolls), but then essentially most of the rest of the series seems 1984
and beyond to me. There is even a quote from Straker in one of the
episodes about it talking 5 years to build the organization. I then put
the Rolls scene at 1980, Foster in Exposed at 1984 and most of the rest
spanning 1985 and several years beyond. (Exposed itself appears to cover
several weeks if not a month or more) There is much of the activities of
SHADO we do not see and the episodes seem to be a peek into SHADO
operations at several months or more spacing. Fosters training alone would
have taken months that we don't see and he also rose through the ranks to
command status which had to have taken at least months more and probably
years.

I realize that this is rather confusing, especially because of the
reference of 1980 flashed in the opening credits but I'm with Gerry on this
one. The wine agrees with Gerry too. After all they would have had to
print up that label specially for that single shot; it would be rather
strange to go to the trouble of making sure we could read the date and then
to get it wrong. My feel is that the wine was supposed to be one year old
and that the episode is set in 1985.

The problem with COMPUTER AFFAIR being in 1984, is
that in SURVIVAL they state that the date is 1981.
Also, in the LONG SLEEP, they state that 10 years
ago was 1970, which also indicates that it's around
1980.

I think that the Rolls scene plus the episode
CONFETTI CHECK A-OK takes place in 1970.

Shawn,
By the time we get to Court Martial, 3 years have passed, because they state
at that time that Paul was with SHADO for 3 years. And in episodes like
ESP, we learn that a lot of time can pass in one episode. Alec tells Paul
that in the month he was in hospital, things were quiet. It may be that by
the end of the season, they actually were in 1985. But none of that is made
clear. And from what Marc has mentioned, the time continuity didn't stay
constant between episodes, since apparently "Long Sleep" took place in '81?
Bizarre.
Yours,
Denise

As Marc pointed out, clearly I too am confused on some stuff (plenty
actually). It sure would be nice to put together a good timeline. I
wouldn't be surprised to discover that some episodes even overlap on it and
even have inconsistencies, (like Foster showing up in scenes supposedly
before he joined SHADO). I'll have to keep re-watching things to look for
more clues. Maybe take notes on individual events that do have a firm time
base or at least clues as to when and how long and which came first. I
also expect that there will be a lot of things for which references will be
completely indeterminable and I suspect that this may be deliberate.

I think if you look at other episodes it will become clear that the
organization had to start before 1980. For one thing Johnny Straker is older
than 5 when he is hit by the car in Question of Priorities. If Straker and
Mary got married right after the Rolls got attacked and and 9 months later
... you only have a 4 year old son which clearly he is not. From the other
episodes like Exposed and Long Sleep you get that SHADO seems have have been
operating for a decade. Which is reasonable amount of time to get all the
hardware built and in place. That is one of the thing I really like about
UFO was it wasn't one of those shows or movies where after the alien menace
is discovered some scientist slaps together a device or gets a idea that lets
us defeat the aliens in the last 15 minutes(like Independence Day). It
showed that we could use existing technology to fight them but it wouldn't be
a 15 minute war.

When Johnny was born, SHADO HQ was still being built and only the first
group of SHADO ops were finishing up their training. It took ten years
from conception to get everything put together in order to REALLY fight
the aliens. The Utronics equipment was the last piece piece of the
puzzle, I think - in 1980.

Also, I think when they are on the Seagull X-Ray, you can read
the date on the newspaper -- it's something like August 1980.

Marc, here is a detail of the paper:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/files/memorymetropolis/date.jpg

I think it's the 24th of August 1980.

BTW, I saw the head of this little guy on the paper:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/files/memorymetropolis/paperguy1.j
pg

First I thought it could be the head of a puppet, therefore a
reminiscent to the old Anderson shows but I think I'm not right in
this case:

The Long Sleep

Neil May
In reply to this post by Marc Martin
If 'The Long Sleep' b&w flashback scenes take place
in 1970, then why does Foster rush from the car with
Straker after Straker's accidentally run over Tessa
Wyatt's character? It certainly looks like Foster, and
if so it's a blooper as we know he doesn't appear in
the series until the 1980s.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

That's easy -- that's not Foster! (I don't even
think he looks like Foster)

Hi Marc

I think it is Foster, it's just his hair is different.
It could just be me though - I wonder what other fans
think?

Yeah - it doesn't really make sense. Best not to try to! Other
series are a bit like this as well, M*A*S*H is a case in point -
the timeline is utterly illogical and all over the place.

Is there a screen cap of this scene? Anybody? It would put it to
rest once and for all.

Thanks James.
OK, I agree too, these images are not Foster/Billington and this has
put that issue to bed but now there is a new question...

Who is it?
