AW: [SHADO] UFO actors

Hi,

the UFO actors were not exactly small (Sewell, Bishop and Billington all or above 6 feet). Most actors are well below 6 feet, with such exceptions like Eastwood or Lee being rather rare. Look up such guys like Pacino, Hoffman or Cruise *smirk*.

Billington topped Bishop by an inch or two I'd say, and Bishop equalled/topped both Professionals actors himself, as can be seen on this and other screenshots of him in his two episodes.

So your feeling that Billington "looked taller" is due actually being taller.

Cheers

Did anyone catch Michael Billington in The Professionals the other day? He played a very nasty criminal type and he looked taller some how; he pulled it off and I only just recognised him.

Okay smart Pants, I was just pointing it out. Bishop was about medium, not small and not tall. Billington was about right I guess as he was a good  tad taller and would have made a good Bond actor in my limited opinion. Sewell was big and and ugly and was supposed to have been a "romantic" character but proved just too ugly. That was why Billington was written in. It must have been his bravado and acting ability that made him look tall and look even tougher. Either that or Lewis Collins and Martin Shaw are diddy men! I am 6' 3 by the way, not immensely tall but not small, with none of the good looks that these guys had:-(

Hi Stevan,

Martin Shaw: 5' 8½"
Lewis Collings: 5' 11"
Ed Bishop: 6"
Michael Billington: ca. 6' 1"
George Sewell: 6' 2"

Hi,

I am extremely fortunate and feel humbled to have met Ed and George on many occasions. I happen to know that Ed was 5'11" as he was exactly the same height as myself. I would say that George was about the same height - if not the same, although with a larger frame.

I saw Mike (but did not meet) at Pinewood once, and I would say he was a little taller at about 6', possible 6' 1" max.

To say that George was ugly is a brash and unnecessary comment. Sure, George was rugged, but he had enough charisma and a grin big enough to fill a large hall, and frequently did! My wife melted in his presence, and he charmed everyone he met. A very nice man.

Ed was cooler, but he had an amazing personality, a wry and self-deprecating sense of humour, a considered response, approach and tone, and a look that bored a hole right through one like a diamond drill through butter. He always remembered my name, and somehow made anyone he talked to feel like they were the only one in the room.

I feel privileged to have met them both.

Regards,

Griff

PS. Surely 6'3" is tall in anyone's language...

Re: UFO actors

Hi Griff,

I also met Ed Bishop once (entirely apart from usual venues). That was during the late 90ies (roughly 1998 I think). I had him down at 5' 11'' as well.

But he was 65-66 years old then already, and I was under the distinct impression that he already had lost height due old age and was slightly stooped as well.

He would have been at 6' if he had been standing straight and without the usual shortening through aging processes, I think. Which is supported by seeing him with various actors during his younger years. Collins definitely had 5'11'' when they did that episode and Bishop tops him there. But he was not yet suffering from aging then either.

Cheers

That is impressive, but I think 6' ft in the UK is pretty standard now. I am 6'3 and there are plenty of women near that and men over 6'3 and 4 so I think it is the average now rather than the other.

Okay, I think I meant George was not cut out for the romantic lead role, he was a rugged actor who played heavies but as you said was a gent and I always liked his more emotional role as Ed's No 2 as a mirror to Straker's cold analytical streak of "facts Alec, facts"...

Stevan,
Beauty's definitely in the eye of the beholder, so don't stress too much because your opinion differs from others.  I've never found Foster handsome, but I'd take Alec any day!  He has the most adorable ornery grin!  And I agree with you that his warmth with his good bud Straker shows a depth to him that takes him a step above Foster's shallow skirt-chasing.  But as you've seen, opinions vary madly about the cast!
I always wished I'd gotten to meet George.  I don't think Bishop was well when I met him.  He looked unhealthy and I even wondered momentarily if he was hungover.  But he had a reputation as a teetotaler, so I think he just wasn't well.  It was nice of him to have come out anyway.  But I can truthfully say that Delores Mendez never aged a day in 40 years!  I'd love to know her secret! *grin*

It's always good to hear what the fans think of the cast and the roles they played.  I haven't seen that Professionals episode with Billington.  What was the title and I'll look it up?
Yours,
Denise

The episode is 'The Rack', second season, and the one with Ed Bishop is 'Long
Shot', first season.

Yes, Stevan, I wouldn't worry about it, everyone of us puts our foot in it at
least once in a while.  Besides life would be very boring if we all thought the
same thing about everything.  While George isn't my cup of tea I do like Alec,
and I agree he does make a great foil for Straker.

And there's another foot placed where it doesn't belong. ;-)))

Straker was played anything but cold and unemotional by Bishop, who gave us a brilliant acting lesson throughout the series by portraying someone who was - circumstantially - forced to be ruthless and cold, but wasn't so as per his nature and had trouble with the cost that behaviour exacted.

I do agree though that Alec Freeman was the perfect, wide open foil to the repressed commander, sort of an externalized conscience, one which I sorely missed after Sewell left the series.

As I started this debate on UFO actors in other roles, I have just watched by happy accident, Operation Daybreak (1975) in which I saw not only George Sewell but Martin Shaw too! At first I thought George was playing Hitler as it looked like he was the most important person in the scene but he was a high ranking Nazi. Shaw was a resistance fighter who betrays his colleagues to protect his family. Based on a real event in 1942. I also missed an up to date version of Journey into space (it will be on again) and Ed was playing the Doc. Enough of my witterings..

Hi all. I do not want to take away from any strings. I do have a question not concerning UFO so, could 2people one across the pond and hopefully one here in the states contact me pvt'l. It's about "The Doctor" and maybe a few others. Please. I have "Netflix" here and have caught up on all of UFO (I think) and look forward to the movie should it come out. That brings me to a question that has been haunting me but under separate email

Shaw was a resistance fighter who betrays his colleagues to protect his family. Based on a real event in 1942. I also missed an up to date version of Journey into space (it will be on again) and Ed was playing the Doc. Enough of my witterings..

That sounds worth looking into, Stevan. I'll check it out. I haven't seen Sewell
in anything other than UFO and Journey to the Far Side, so it would be nice to
see him doing something else.

Yours,
Denise

George was in loads of ITC series during the sixties before Journey and
UFO. He was in two comedy seris during the 80's and 90's. Up the
elephant around the Castle (as a electronics manufacturer millionaire,
and as the Boss of The Detectives with Jasper Carot and Robert Powell.

Stevan,
I've heard of The Detectives!  I've even got it on my list to watch some time.  Now that I know he's in it, I'll put it at the top!  Thanks so much!  I'm always on the lookout for a new show to watch, and so many of them are boring, boring, boring!  So I've gotten so that I'm a bit skittish in trying out a new one, because of the disappointment.  But I'll check this one out!
Yours,
Denise

Straker, somehow it's always about you.
