Sorry Marc,
that I am a LITTLE bit too late for the EXPOSED discussion! I hope you don't mind that I lag behind. (After all I don't want to get in CONFLICT with you :-) EXPOSED is an episode which became better in my opinion over the years. It's another introduction ep with great confrontations between Foster and Jackson and Straker respectively (I remember that this was my first Super-8 movie and I have watched the first real - about 15 minutes - over and over again :-). My notices (OK, call it nit-picking, if you like :-): * SID announces that he's got a "positive track 428 146 Green", but Harrington instructs the Interceptor pilots that the UFOs are on "Green 140 273". Hm. Isn't that slightly different? :-) (Maybe SID was wrong this time because in SHADO HQ an operator stated 140 273 also.) * The information about the speed is a little bit strange. SID says "Speed: Zero Sol Eight"; the screen shows Sol 8 and you can hear Harrington who says "Speed: Sol Zero Decimale [Cut]. 0 Sol 8? Sol 8? Sol 0.8? <ponder ponder> * SID first dedected the UFOs at 32 million miles. Can anyone tell me how far away from Earth (or from SID?) this is? I have always problems converting miles into meters. There seems to be different sort of miles too :-/ * This is the first episode with 3 UFOs on the attack and have a look: when the UFOs passing by from the right to the left, after the second UFO has passed the center of the screen a lightspot suddenly appears. One can watch it every time this shot is used - which is BTW very often in this episode! * When the first UFO explodes you can see the UFO flying THROUGH the explosion. Obviously two shots were copied together (a passing UFO and an explosion). * "Grid reference G 6"? That reminds me of THE RESPONSIBILITY SEAT where they use a "G 6" for the voice identification of a certain Miss Frazer :-) * Someone stated that the test aircraft flies very high above the clouds (seems to be in space) and Sky 1 must be a very special aircraft for it can fly in this height. That are my thoughts too. * Okay, I know I am nit-picking :-) but when Dr. Fraser leaves Foster in the hospital he pulls down the door-handle on one side but the counterpart on the other side remains in the same position instead of going down too. Perhaps in the "future" it'll works another way? (Well, at least in Kofax` office it works the old way round :-) * Straker wears this new suit, which isn't my taste BTW (but that's a matter of taste ;-) but I remember that Mark Bradley was wearing this suit in COMPUTER AFFAIR too. Same tailor? ;-) * Aaaah.... Vladek Sheybal as Dr. Jackson (he IS a great actor!). You know I like this confrontation of Jackson and Foster very much. I think it's one of the best parts in this ep. Billington and Sheybal give their best performance! And watch out for this evil look of Jackson/Sheybal. Superb! >8-) * Why does Foster ram his own door? For what purpose? Any guesses? (And why is he holding his left shoulder although he has rammed the door with his right one? :-) * Obviously Straker wants to recruit Foster for SHADO very early on, because he forces this by sending Jenna to make Foster suspicious and then the two toughs to corroborate his opinion. BTW Jean Marsh is better known for her role as Rose in UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS (in German: DAS HAUS AM EATON PLACE). * It's very bright in Kofax' office, so you don't need a pocket lamp, Paul ;-) (Full moon, perhaps.) * When Foster founds the envelop in Kofax` safe, it reads ED STRAKER, HARLINGTON-STRAKER STUDIOS, CV-105 I wonder: why should Kofax stay in contact with a film studio? Does he know of the existance of SHADO? (No. Later on Straker explains to Foster that "Kofax knows nothing of all this. But he played along." Nevertheless, hasn't Kofax wondered about the film studio?) * I like the confrontation of Foster and Straker! I like it! {{8-)) * At last the headlines of the DAILY EXPRESS: CABINET MINISTER KILLED Miracle escape for U.S. colonel Ministers urge strong action to counter subversion (and a picture of Straker when he get out of the airplane as seen in IDENTIFIED). Other lines state: Gold Robbery: man held at airport Resorts face new oil stick crises OUR COLONEL'S A SUPER GIRL SAYS THE SERGEANT (what that means? :-) So that's all. I hope I haven't bothered some listers with my late- coming... {:-I CU Christian (who is trying to get not in CONFLICT with the time schedule) |

(Dunn's was a very English gents outfitters for the older gent.) I always felt that suit did not look right on Straker. That style of suit looked a lot better on "he of the eyebrows". Being a bit like a cardigan in the jacket part I feel IMHO that it more suited the mature man, with a fuller figure. It did absolutely nothing for the svelte lines of our beloved Commander. For his Strakerness he looked better in the jump-suits and neatly tailored dark blue, or off white or brown with green turtle neck or.....nuff said:-) Sheila "A dEdicatEd Ed Strakerite" |

Jeesh, but you DID pay close attention! Nah Christian has been reading the paper from Lisa's frame capture! Isn't it great to be able to read that fornt page's head lines? ( You know the Daily Express isn't the august organ of the press it was...ever since it became a tabloid it has gone down the slippery slope of lowest common denominator journalism...but I digress, sorry Marc.) Now but maybe someone can explain this thing about the newspaper that has been puzzling me for ages. We know that Janna is a SHADO operative right (although you would not know that on first time viewing.) So therefore Straker/SHADO want Foster to see that newspaper to see if he takes the bait and tries to find out about Straker and put together the connection with UFOs. However why was that paper reporting a ten year old news item as headline news? Any one gonna help me here? Is it me? Am I being really dense here? Sheila Still UFO Crazy crazy crazy crrraaazzzzy! |

* The information about the speed is a little bit strange. SID says "Speed: Zero Sol Eight"; the screen shows Sol 8 and you can hear Harrington who says "Speed: Sol Zero Decimale [Cut]. 0 Sol 8? Sol 8? Sol 0.8?" ponder ponder * SID first dedected the UFOs at 32 million miles. Can anyone tell me how far away from Earth (or from SID?) this is? I have always problems converting miles into meters. There seems to be different sort of miles too: -/ True, there are many different types of miles, which is why this system is so confusing. They are probably talking about "Statute Miles" here, which is about 1.6 kilometers, so 32 million miles is about 51 million kilometers. To give you an idea of the scale of these things, the moon is about 240 thousand miles away from the earth, so that UFO is about 133 times farther away than the moon is, or about halfway the distance to Mars at it's closest approach. The Earth is about 7927 miles across. The sun is 93 million miles from the Earth, so the UFO is about 1/3 of the distance from us as the sun is. At SOL 8, which I assume is 8 X the speed of light, a UFO would cover a million miles in about 2/3rd's of a second, so it is less than half a minute away. There are other types of miles: there is the "Statute Mile", which is used primarily in land navigation, and there is the "Nautical Mile ", which is used in sea and air navigation. The Nautical mile as about 1.852 kilometers, or 6076 feet. The reason nautical miles are so cool, is because they are derived directly from earth geometry and make global navigation easier. A nautical mile corresponds to the distance one travels over the surface of the earth when traversing one angular minute of arc from the earth's center, thus by definition, each minute of longitude (N-S) on a chart is 1 nautical mile. The same is true for latitude (E-W), but only at the equator, since latitude circles shrink as one progresses towards the poles. In early days, when mariners navigated by the stars, this made for very simplified navigation. There is also such a thing as a "British Nautical Mile" which is about 4 feet longer than a regular nautical mile. The reason why they have these.... I have no idea. Watch ahead in the episode "Close Up", and you'll really get misled about distances and appearence. Sometimes you really have to suspend disbelief on this show. * Someone stated that the test aircraft flies very high above the clouds (seems to be in space) and Sky 1 must be a very special aircraft for it can fly in this height. That are my thoughts too. Back in the early sixties, NASA and the Air Force ran the X-15 program, the highest flying aircraft we'll publicly admit to. That flew at about the same height, about 50 miles. It is a real stretch to believe that a submersible airplane can fly up that high. Note the flight gear that Paul and his co-pilot have on, which is standard flight gear with enriched oxygen supply masks. This is inapropriate at this altitude. Full pressure suits would be needed if they lost their cabin air. Hope this helps. One question, slightly off topic, I have for any computer savvy's out there: when you download over the net, how much of the incoming data stream is the actual file? Is there a lot of quality control info shipped along with the file? When I try to download stuff from this site, I find I get 1/10th to 1/20th of my rated modem speed at best. Could it be transmitting full speed, but only a small fraction of the incoming stream is actual file? If you've got an answer for me, please e- mail me separately at; [hidden email] Thanks! The Earth is > about 7927 miles across. There's an episode where a UFO's estimated destination is calculated to be 'Southern England' while it's still seven million miles away - so given that the Earth is less than 8000 miles in diameter, it would only have to deviate course by a tiny fraction of a degree to land in a different continent altogether - but somehow they never do. In fact they seem to like it here in England, don't know why, if it was me I'd go for somewhere a bit more warm and sunny. > There is also such a thing as a "British Nautical Mile" which > is about 4 feet longer > than a regular nautical mile. The reason why they have > these.... I have no idea. > No offence, but the British *invented* the nautical mile, originally known as the Admiralty mile. There have actually been several definitions - originally it was considered to be 6080 feet by the Admiralty, but the US decided to deviate from this - so in fact there's a regular nautical mile, and a US nautical mile.
