Greetings Fellow SHADOans -
I was watching part of Stanley Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" today. Now, who should happen to show up as Ryan O'Neal's "Second" in the duel scene? And no booze-o-matic in sight... "Imagine a dying planet in some distant corner of the universe. Its natural resources exhausted. Its inhabitants sterile. Doomed to extinction. A situation we may one day find ourselves in, gentlemen. So they discover earth. Abundant, fertile. Able to satisfy their needs. They look upon us not with animosity, but callousness. As we look upon our animals that we depend on for food. Yes, it appears they are driven by circumstance across a billion miles of space, driven on by the greatest force in the universe - survival."

Really? I didn't know George was in Barry Lyndon. I guess I'd never seen it
before - I'll make a point of watching it if it becomes available here in Atlantic Canuckland! Area Woman Perishes Viewing Kubrick Film
Ottawa (CP) - Canadian Pam "MCCAUG" McCaug was awarded a posthumous membership in the Order of Canada for outstanding bravery, after a tragic attempt to sit though Stanley Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon', local authorities have reported. "I found her curled up in a ball on the chesterfield this morning," said her distraught husband, adding that his late wife could not be talked out of viewing the lengthy film, even if it meant watching it alone. The province's chief medical examiner has ruled out foul play, indicating that the woman likely perished at the halfway point of the 5-hour film, just after a cameo appearance by obscure English character actor George Sewell. Cause of death is believed to be exhaustion aggravated by sheer boredom. RCMP have been scouring internet newsgroups to locate a mystery man known only as "The Lynx" who may have mistakenly contributed to the woman's demise with a misguided recommendation. --- In [hidden email], "MCCAUG" <mccaug@n...> wrote: > Really? Personally I found it engrossing, and have since it both on laserdisc and in the theater (at a revival showing). And having George Sewell in it was a pleasant bonus. However, I think most people would find the movie hard to sit through... And yes, I'm back -- survived my vacation! :-) Thanks to Bill Cotter for looking after the list while I was away! Marc |
I think the reason I haven't seen BL before is because it was made in the
heyday of Ryan O'Neal's years as a movie idol and I didn't esp think he was that great an actor. Also, after seeing "2001: a Space Odyssey" by Kubrick, I was a little wary of seeing another of his flicks. 5 hours? That must be with commericals as the actual running time is only 3
hours and 3 minutes. Maybe they should just cutout every thing but the scenes with George Sewell and the Marisa Berenson nude scenes and save lives<g> James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Well if that's your reasoning Pam, then you not doing yourself any
favors. As a rule, I don't like Ryan O'Neal either. But he really suited the part here. Each film that Kubrick did was *totally* different from the next. He explored different themes and territory each time... and the look and feel of each film is very different... with the common link being Kubrick's eye for detail and his way of evoking strong performances from his actors. Love him or hate him... the man was a perfectionist and a brilliant director. Plus he tackled very controversial themes (for the time) - i.e: A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Dr Strangelove, Lolita, Paths of Glory. All of these projects were both damned and acclaimed. The others Jaime mentions were though, I'm sure. |

No... You're probably getting it mixed up with 'Platoon'. That was
Oliver's war flick. Jaime On Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at 11:55 AM, Yuchtar wrote: > Full Metal Jacket? <ponder> Wasn't that Oliver Stone? (Another director > I loathe ....) > > -- Y |

Sorry, Yuchtar. Fully Metal Jacket is a Kubrick film. You are thinking of
Platoon which is the one by Stone which came out a year earlier in 1986. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I beg to disagree a bit. Regarding the look and feel, if you noticed, a lot of the actors in Barry Lyndon were the same that appeared in A Clockwork Orange! That was a bit distracting to me. I was watching "The Shinning" a few years ago and had forgotten it was a Kubrick film, but by the look of certain shoots, I said to myself, "this has to be a Stanley Kubrick film"! Sure enough. I know, very off topic. Too bad Ed Bishop didn't appear in more Kubrick films besides 2001. By the way, as I recall, the lunar rover they used in 2001 looks suspiciously similar to the one in UFO... right? Anyone knows what is the exact connection between 2001 and UFO? I think I have heard it before, but don't recall the details... David Levine |

Billington in the commentary for Kill Straker indicates the same (2001 and
UFO being filmed at the same time rather than at the same studio.) I'm wondering what was going on at Borehamwood that was making it so comfusing? -----Original Message----- From: Marc Martin [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Wednesday, February 12, 2003 6:22 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [SHADO] Re: Freeman Fans >I know, very off topic. Hmmm, where was MOON ZERO TWO shot? Or perhaps, they are confused about the
closeness of DOPPELGANGER's shooting with the start of UFO.
