Future Ed Straker?

Diorite Gabbro
I've wracked my brains on the question of who I would
cast as Ed Straker if I were to make new UFO episodes
or a movie. I've come up with two possibilities.

If we want to do a continuation and have Straker be an
old fart, my choice is Tommy Lee Jones. As hard as I
tried, I couldn't find any of the younger American
actors that I thought could pull off a younger
Straker. So, my choice? I'd have to go with Ewan
McGregor. He can do a passable US accent and I think
has the necessary acting chops.

"Responsibility Seat" should be up in a couple of
days, I'm part way done.

Kevin McKidd? He played Lucius Vorenus in "Rome," and did a fine
American accent in "Journeyman."Vorenus struck me as very Strakerish.

Neal McDonough of "Tin Man" fame is my choice for Ed Straker in a remake Theatrical film. I very much would like this to happen in 2009 as the 40th anniversary tribute to the original show. UFO was was one of the finest science fiction oriented programs ever made and Neal fits the part like a glove, not only for his acting style, but the intense eyes and blonde hair.

Yes, he did remind me quite a bit of Ed Straker when he (Neal) was
starring in "Medical Investigations": the similar appearance, the same
intensity, the same hiding of pain.

Oh the other hand, McDonough has never impressed me. In my eyes, his
acting doesn't meet my Straker standards. I see him more as a poor
man's version of Patrick Swayze.

The other guy, Kevin McKidd, I can't say anything about because I've
never seen him act.

I totally agree that this would be an excellent choice. But I must admit, a
twisted side of me would love to see Chef Gordon Ramsey as General Henderson.

Dorite:

If you can rent the HBO series "Rome" from Netflix, then you might
understand what we are talking about. Not only was it a good series, but Kevin Mckidd
was fantastic in it, and very Straker like. I wish I lived on the other side
of the pond just to keep up with this actor's career.

Happy New Year, Wendy

No doubt, in my opinion David Caruso.

Re: Future Ed Straker?

Pam McCaughey-2

While I have no doubt David Caruso has Straker's intensity, he doesn't have the 'look'. I showed the UFO opening sequence to a much younger friend of mine several weeks ago and one of the first things he said to me was 'look at those intense blue eyes' in regards to Ed Bishop. Then he noticed all the cool hardware and of course the close up of Gay Ellis' short short skirt at the end. So I think Ed Bishop did make an impact with his looks. If we're commenting on people who could portray our heroes in a movie or feature - I throw my vote for Canadian singer Jimmy Rankin into the ring to play Paul Foster - he could pull it off looks wise I think.

Re: Future Ed Straker?

The possible casting of E. Wood as Straker would depend on the time frame the movie was going to be planned for. If the story was to open with the very beginnings of SHADO, Mr. Wood might qualify - Straker was likely in his early thirties when he was assigned to be SHADO's commander and the fledgling organization was started. I also suspect Mr. Wood was asked to 'play' younger than he really was as Frodo. Look at Toby MacGuire who is currently and really in his 30's but has been playing Spiderman as a teen or early 20-something. That's why its called acting! Pam the Canuck

Did anybody see The Tin Man on the SciFi Channel? I've seen Neal
McDonough in a couple of other shows. My vote for a new Commander
Straker would be him. His hair is already blonde. He's also around the
right age. Neal McDonough gets my vote.

Please! Do I have to?

Next you'll be telling me Keanu Reeves will be playing Klaatu. Oh,
wait. He is. Keanu is no Michael Rennie.

If we're going for folks a little on the young side, how about Jamie
Bamber? It'd be nice to see Jamie as a blond again. And the man can
act and, oh my, is he gorgeous!

I think Neal McDonough would be an excellent choice for Straker too. Haven't seen The Tin Man, but I remember him from Star Trek: First Contact, And Minority Report, among others. It also doesn't hurt that he's about half a foot taller than Elijah Wood, thus cutting a more imposing presence.

WHAT??? There's to be a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu? You're pulling my leg, right??? Say it isn't so!!

P.S. Jamie Bamber would be a good choice as Straker!! I never even thought of him...

I refused to watch a "re-imagining" of Oz. And the
reviews were a real turn-off.

This guy's name keeps coming up but I just can't see
him as Straker. He's just missing something I can't
describe.

I nominate our own fearless leader, Marc, as the new Straker.

He's a rocket scientist, tall and has a strong jawline (striking, actually).
