- USA -- Got the DVDs!

ultramannick
Just got the package from Amazon.co.uk today and FYI
all other US buyers, I live in WA State.

My two-year old is busy watching Barney so I can't
check the discs yet. However...I'm very disappointed
that the 5 postcards and collector's booklet was left
out of the box. I wonder if this was just a fluke or
are they being left out of any US buyer's boxes?

As soon as my son goes down for his nap, I'll check
the discs on my DAEWOO 5000N-3000 and see how the
PAL/NCTS switch works. Now, where's that sleeping
powder..?

I think you may find that they are indeed PAL encoded (They are
supposed to be), the US version Daewoo DVD player uses NTSC as its
default for the connectors you used on the back when you hooked it
up. It's just doing the conversion trasparently. (I have the 9000n)

The discs are region free however so essentially with that Daewoo you
just play them like any other US/NTSC disc. You don't need the
region hack or secret menu to get them to play.

The lack of postcards is a concern though, I'll be unhappy if there
really are different versions being sent to the US vs UK addresses
and I'll freak-sideways if the content differs at all.

If Carlton is sending out region-free *and* NTSC format then I'll bet
A&E will be fuming. The region-free part is already going to hurt
their sales of their edition. If the discs shipped to the US are
NTSC format too then thats gonna hurt.

Honestly, I can't imagine that Carlton would go to the trouble
of manufacturing a separate NTSC version just for US purchasers
in the face of competition from A&E - and then not even
advertise it as such.

I was surprised to hear that the postcards weren't included in
ultramnnick's box set though, even more surprising if the booklet
has been left out - since it holds the chapter index.

Methinks you got a defective boxed set in that respect.
I got all that (only problem is: there's not postcard with his
Commanderness' mug on it and, well, that's an oversight. <sulk>

They played fine on my Apex and TV set.
Had no need for the 'flashing' manoeuvre!

I don't know. All I know is that when I put the discs
in to my Daewoo DVD player, I was anticipating having
to change the region code from the secret menu AND
having to try out the PAL/NTSC switch on the remote.
But when the machine fired up the disc, I had to do
neither. The player has a PAL/NTSC auto-switch but I'm
also able to do it manually---but when I tried the PAL
setting, the picture went BxW and distorted. On NCTS,
it was fine. I don't get it myself, but...I'm NOT
complaining!

I'll check the display--but no where on the box does
it indicate that it's in PAL format, either. But it
*does* say Region 2, so go figure.

All I know is that when I put the disc in and expected
to hack around, it just started playing fine.

These discs are TOO good. One should not be able to
watch UFO like this. It's like they filmed it
yesterday. Creepy.

I'm Back... with the DVDs!

Marc Martin

In reply to this post by ultramannick
Hi all,

I'm back from my vacation in Hawaii, and surprise -- the UFO DVDs
were awaiting me upon my arrival! I also didn't get any postcards
with mine -- perhaps this is an Amazon.co.uk thing? Also, although
these DVDs play just fine on my APEX player, when I put them into my
American Sony player, it said that playing these DVDs in this region
was prohibited, so I wonder if these really are region-free? I'll
have to setup my Apex as Region-1 only and see what happens then.

It's about midnight, so I'm not about to start watching a whole
episode to see what it's like. So far, it does appear that the
quality is better than the Japanese laserdiscs, and what really
astounds me is the audio quality -- it appears that they found (and
used!) the magnetic tracks instead of the optical audio tracks, which
has far better sound quality than has ever been heard before.

Also, I *do* notice that these are running a bit faster than the
laserdiscs... that 4% PAL speedup...

Marc

Oh, and thanks again to Bill Cotter for looking after the list while
I was on vacation!

The discs are PAL, but your TV cannot display PAL, hence the
distortion when you try to watch them in their native format. Your
player is one of the few that contains a video standards converter to
convert the 625 line / 50 field PAL video to 525/60 NTSC that your TV
can handle. Unfortunately, the conversion is pretty crude and will
introduce conversion artefacts, notably judder on pans and fast
motion and stepping on diagonal lines. If you're pleased with the
quality of the pictures you're seeing, you would be astonished at how
much better it would look if you were watching in native PAL!

Hi all,

Just joined the group. I haven't seen the whole thread but regarding the
above and postcards, the only UFO DVDs to include postcards are those sold
here in the UK at Woolworths (its an offer exclusive to Woolworths). So if
you bought your DVDs from any other source (including the Carlton website)
then you won't get the 5(?) free postcards.

Welocme back, Marc!

It's great that your DVDs arrived in the nick of time :-)
I wonder why there are no postcards in some boxes. Weren't they put
in by the manufacturer first?

I still wonder. Do different pressings from the set exist?

I've noticed that too. But this is no problem for me because it's the
same speed they've used on TV or on video tapes so far.

Marc,
When you put them in the Sony you get a "prohibited" warning. Is this a map
with the regions marked out? I have a DVPs 7700, and some discs get weird
warnings, too. I don't want to purchase a converter, and then the sets, and
not have them play!
Also, you mentioned the dreaded 'speedup'...is this the mastering? Would it
exist on the US versions when they show up? (again, why would they use
different mastering for A&E?....) It's all very odd about certain sets
playing/not playing, no cards (unless they were VERY limited to the first
sets), etc.

On my Sony player, I just get a blue screen with some text saying
that you can't play this disc due to area restrictions. This is the
same error message I get on Region 2 discs. However, I think it's
possible that it's giving this error because it's a PAL disc.

>Also, you mentioned the dreaded 'speedup'...is this the mastering? Would it

The 4% speed-up is simply an artifact of them being made for a PAL TV
system. All of the UK broadcast and video versions of UFO have have
this same 4% speed-up, so in the in the UK (and other PAL countries),
this is considered UFO's "normal" speed.

In the the USA, Japan, and other NTSC countries, UFO's "normal" speed
is much closer to that of the original 35mm film. They can make new
NTSC masters running at this speed using the new PAL masters as the
source. They can simply convert them using a professional machine
that provides far better results than a cheap consumer APEX or DAEWOO
DVD player can.

What A&E releases remains to be seen... hopefully it will be NTSC
versions of these new masters. However, it seems likely that the A&E
versions won't have all of the elaborate extras that the Carlton DVDs
do. It appears that the folks at A&E simply don't care as much about
this as Carlton Visual Entertainment (formerly Carlton Video) does.

But the second box will contain an audio commentary on SUB-SMASH from

This sound strange.
I buy on-line directly from Carlton and I obtain the 5 cards.
