I just became the Editor of tvtome's UFO guide a few weeks ago, and I just now found this site (through UFOSeries.com). I really enjoyed the series back when it came out (yeah, I'm that old), and again through the years of reruns. I look forward to hearing what ya'll have to say here, as I am still trying to refresh my memories of each episode. I'll post a link to the tvt UFO guide page once I figure out how. Also, if it's wanted, I can post a link to this group at my guide. And don't worry; I am a very easy going poster. Thanks, Steve (Fu) |
Steve,
Welcome to our message board. I love TV tome. I am 43 and very nostalgic. Here at SHADO we have tech, plot , costume, and just plain old trivia experts who love UFO. SHADO may have been a super secret organisation but we love talking about it. fumanchu1982 <[hidden email]> wrote: I just became the Editor of tvtome's UFO guide a few weeks ago, and I just now found this site (through UFOSeries.com). Not really cool to lift graphics directly from Marc's site unless you
got his permission... fumanchu1982 wrote: > > > I just became the Editor of tvtome's UFO guide a few weeks ago, and I > just now found this site (through UFOSeries.com). Actually, the graphic was not lifted from ufoseries' site. Not a friendly greeting for a new member. Thats the one I'm referring to.

Well, you know - although it was clearly lifted from Marc's site, I think we should bear in mind that it's merely an arrangement of frames grabbed from the DVDs, not original artwork. In fact strictly speaking I suspect that the copyright owner (Carlton?) would have been the appropriate place to seek permission to reproduce those images. |

Yes, in terms of getting permission from the rightful owners, you are correct (except that these days it is Granada, not Carlton), but I would still think that someone should create their own collection of new frame grabs instead of just taking something created for another site. It seemes I have raised a firestorm here. This pic was put in place years before I got to TV Tome. Please give me a little time to check on this internally. I will let you know what I find out. I can say that in checking early on, when I took over the guide, this pic was on more sites than just Marcs and TV Tomes. Sorry for the mess. Yes, that picture is used on many sites, but I was the one who spent the time to create it in the first place. Everyone else has merely copied it. There is a site that archives old versions of web pages: web.archive.org You can trace the evolution of that graphic by looking at old versions of the UFO Series Home Page. Back in 1997, the graphic was vertical, and had slightly different pictures: http://web.archive.org/web/19970529175630/http://ufo.simplenet.com/ Then in 1998, I redid it to something that's more familiar to current readers: http://web.archive.org/web/19981201235709/http://www.ufo.simplenet.com/ Then in 2002, Christian Jenisch went through the DVDs and supplied me with higher quality versions of my original captures (from the Japanese laserdiscs), and I also add the Alien picture at the end: http://web.archive.org/web/20020718184427/http://ufoseries.com/ But I can't do much to stop people from copying my stuff. It's even more annoying when they duplicate my episode guide and then take my name off it as the author. Or when they printout the script transcriptions and then sell them on eBay. But that's life on the web, I guess... :-) Marc |

I will remove it pending a response from TV Tome. Marc, We will remove it permanently if you wish. However, if its ok with you, I hope we can leave it in the guide intro. I will leave it out, till I hear. I would think that as well. I'm not talking about using photos from the show - all UFO websites do that, I'm talking about lifting a graphic that Marc spent his freetime putting together for his own site. As for it not being a friendly greeting to a new member, it might not have been - but at least it wasn't unfriendly. I did offer that it was only not cool if done without permission. I wasn't accusing, just positing my opinion. AT |

It's my *preference* that you use a different graphic than the one that's on my main page, but I'm not going to force the issue. Because, like you say, that graphic has been copied by many websites. In fact, in the interest of being unique, we should *all* (including me) change our graphics... :-) Marc |

No problem. I'll find another graph to replace it. But maybe that's the way of life today :-/ Christian |
