Karen,
My favorite UFO character is Straker but with Foster running a close second. Straker was the ideal idea man for the beginning of SHADO. If the show had lasted like B5 I think Foster would have made a great second in command or even Commander of SHADO if Straker retired. When I saw the show from first to last episode I disliked Straker for about two months when I saw A Matter of Priorities. It wasn't until we had discussed it in the forum and I watched the episode carefuly that I realised just how much Straker loved his son. Dr. Jackson also intrigued me. I saw him in an old New Avengers as a villain who had control over birds. He could have gone either way. In the early episodes he was an intelligent opponent to Foster. Then in later episodes he was a human think tank. Col. Lake would have been my favorite if she had not been crammed in at the last minute. Most of her characterisation was in the episode The Man Who Came Back. How did you like Col. Lake? raribear <[hidden email]> wrote: --- In [hidden email], legg bryan wrote: > Thank you Karen that makes me feel alot better. Sometimes I type things the wrong way. I have a friend in AZ that shipped me about 50 DVDs of Dr. WHo. I am going to send him UFO. I know I can trust him because we have sent so much stuff back and forth. Maybe I can get him to get on these boards with the rest of us. Who is your favorite character on UFO and why? > I have some friends from another chat forum (not UFO) and it's always heartwarming to find out how generous people can be. I've been mailed quite a bit of stuff by fans who are willing to share. Normally I buy stuff if it's available but when you're looking for something that's decades out of date, it's hard to come by. People in my chat group will spot a video in a clearance bin and buy with the sole purpose of mailing it off to any other needy fan in the group. I usually try to send something in return as a token of my appreciation although I'm never asked to. It's good to see the same between you and your friend. I used to watch Dr. Who as a kid but it was never broadcast in my locales when I got to be older. I'm sure it's on the Space channel but we don't get that anymore. I'd have to say that Straker is my favorite character of the lot. I think that Ed Bishop did a good job with him but then again I believe he had the most air time. He had a very commanding presence so it's hard not to be drawn to him. I find the most intriguing character of UFO to be Dr. Jackson. I would really have liked UFO to continue on in production just to see his character development. It could be that he would have ended up being my favorite but he just wasn't given the chance. When you consider how much air time Jackson had it's amazing how he sticks in your mind. Good guy or bad guy, who knows? So who's your favorite? Karen Yahoo! Sometimes it is difficult for those of us in the US to get jokes that appear on these boards. Different people have different interests. I only answer questions or post if I find it interesting. We also have to pay attention to rules and terms of service. I love the show UFO but I don't like "potty" humor or how much paint I should put on my new model. Both are accepted but they just don't interest me. But if you find a blooper or have an interesting personal story about meeting a member of the cast, that I find interesting. I even found the discussion about rank cool. Different strokes for different folks.
Teresa - ISOSHADO <[hidden email]> wrote: It's also sometimes hard for "foreigners" (non US non UK) to get the various "domestic" jokes or some discussions going on, overall. For example, I did enjoy only a few jokes on Straker/Foster and the Echo Gun. I also tend not to pay attention to the various replies on a discussion topic which did not interest me. For example, if a message still carries the subject "rank", I definitely skip it even though someone may have moved the discussion to some other topic. teresa ----- Original Message ----- > Regarding some people only sporadically posting messages - sometimes if > the subject is relevant to the USA ... Philippa I love your name. Ever since I read Agatha Christie's "A Murder is Announced". One of the characters is Phillippa Hymes. Anyway your misadventure reminded me of something that happened to me. I was on my own but I always found money to go to conventions. I never had money for costumes but I had alot of friends who did like to costume. I had to appear as Data for a panel discussion on the STNG story lines. I am 6'. My friend was 5'8". I looked silly in the costume but no one else had a costume for me. As Data I was supposed to be non emotional. But my friends on the panel had me grimacing because I could not smile. Finaly I broke character, shouted I AM NOT DATA, I AM LORE at the top of my lungs. I burst from the stage and ran out the door. The funny thing was a friend of mine thought quickly and yelled quick, after him. They were all wearing red uniforms. I know this is not UFO related but I thought you might get a kick out of it.

> How did you like Col. Lake? I have to admit I'm not drawn to Col. Lake and I don't think it's because she's a beautiful woman so there's no meow factor there. Gay Ellis is also beautiful but I find her character much more attractive. I sense a warmth to her that I don't in Lake. I'm trying to think why I don't like her and all I can say is that Lake strikes me as the type of woman whom I wouldn't want to work for because she could have the capability of being a real b*tch. I'd think she'd put the job before the person whereas Ellis would consider the individual first. Now having said that, there could have been some potential for Lake to reveal more of the inner workings as her character developed in the series. It's just unfortunate that that didn't happen. I think Lake shows some of her softer side with Straker but I don't think that counts. To my mind it just means that she fancies him doesn't necessarily mean she's that way with anyone else. I was thinking of your "who's your favorite character" question last night and I realised that I'm quite a fan of Ford also. He may not be leader material but he strikes me as the man you most want to have around because he seems to be the one who's always doing whatever needs to be done. Straker and company might give the orders but they'd be helpless without Ford carrying out those orders. Karen |

Karen,
I also like Ford but for some very different reasons. Straker is the commanding presence and alpha male. Except for the episode where he made a mistake and Straker called him on the floor, he is very dependable. He is a follower. He follows orders and makes sure things get done. If it weren't for Ford, Straker and Foster would just be cut outs of each other. Sometimes we have to see someone be fallible or they just come off as a jerk. That is why Matter of Priorities was so good. Straker screwed up and it lost him whatever respect Mary still had for him and the life of his son. raribear <[hidden email]> wrote: > How did you like Col. Lake? My favorite scene for him is when he presents the papers to Alec Freeman in "Responsibility Seat", after the false SkyDiver alarm saying "....Even a 'Practice Launch' requires an authorization...." I agree with you on that scene with Ford in 'Responsibility Seat' being one of my favorites also. I look at the scene and to me it says it all, doesn't it? Karen |

David,
Feel free to but in anytime. lol I made a mess of a situation and Karen was kind enough to accept my apology. Then we made a new start. So Who is your favorite character? By the way you were not butting in. Sometimes when you email someone privatly they get upset. I am trying to be a good poster. davrecon <[hidden email]> wrote: ----- Original Message ----- From: "legg bryan" To: Sent: Sunday, April 10, 2005 1:08 AM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: New Member > > Karen, > I also like Ford but for some very different reasons. Joyce, (Or should I say Lt. Joyce?) *grin* Your Moonbase costume was beautifully done. And you didn't look bad in the wig either! It made me look like a pod person. I wonder if you need the right shape of face to make it look good. Whatever it is, you've got it. Are you looking to take over Gay's job? BTW, did you enjoy Dragon Con? I've always wanted to go, but wasn't sure I'd fit in with all those fantasy types. Is sci-fi pretty well represented there? Yours, Denise
Straker, somehow it's always about you.

Kevin! So glad to know that you're still doing UFO Cartoons! I've been lurking for a long time, so I've missed quite a few, I think. Do you have a file of your more recent ones that I could view? I didn't see anything in the Files section here, but that doesn't mean that they aren't there, just that I didn't find them. Let me know, ok? Cause I love your stuff! Yours, Denise
Straker, somehow it's always about you.

I usually enjoy your cartoons also. Everyone has an opinion on what is funny and what is not funny. I used to think that Carol Burnett was soooooo funny. Now I look at it and wonder why. Some was great some was not so great. I can't watch Southpark but I love absolutly faboulous. Just my opinion.
