New to Group

Hi All,

I just joined the group. I've been a fan of UFO for a couple of
years now after discovering it on video in the 90's. I was
originally a fan of Space:1999 (still am) and find some of the
similarities fascinating. It actually took me a while to get used to
the purple wigs and the inteceptors with one missle apiece, but soon
found the series to be more than simply an effects show. The actors
werte uniformly excellent and the stories extremely adult. The music
is fabulous as well.

Anyway, I look forward to discussing the series with you.

Foist, I'd like to thank everyone for their welcomes.
I'm in a couple of groups, and it's been a long time
since I was "the new guy".

I'm up on a few episodes, but there are some I'll be
completely lost with. I really enjoy the series as a
whole, but there are some episodes that really put me
to sleep. Still, when it's firing on all cylinders,
UFO is crackling good entertainment.

If I had to pick my favorite episodes, it would be
these (in no particular order):
1. Identified
2. A Question of Priorities
3. Timelash
4. Reflections in the Water
5. Mindbender
6. Confetti Check A-Ok (this edited with Priorities
would make a great movie)
7. Court Martial
8. Kill Straker
9. Close-Up (I love seeing Gabrielle Drake "out of
uniform" - and the plot was good, too)

Welcome aboard Scotty!

I was a huge fan of the show as a little kid when it aired on CBS on
Saturdays at 7pm back in '72. Unfortunately, that was the last time I saw it
until about 3 years ago, when I ran into the series on videotape. That was
when I'd first signed onto internet, and one of the first search strings I'd
looked for was for Gerry Anderson's UFO, and that brought me to Marc's site.
Up until then, I thought I was the only fan of the show in the world,
basically, because anyone I'd talked to about it didn't remember it....or if
they did, it didn't make much of an impression on them.

Seeing it on tape and in color for the first time was a bit of a gag. As
a kid, I'd only seen it on an old Sylvania black & white!

I remember watching the show after people telling me
it was better than Space:1999. I don't agree, but I
found myself enjoying UFO a lot more than I expected.
I love the complexity and darkness of the stories.

That's what snagged me about the show, it was dark, gritty, and tragic,
unlike most of the other sci-fi tripe that was on at the time. I remembered
it as there was always something going wrong in the episodes, and people
were dying. Some of the vivid memories I had retained of the show over the
years before seeing it on tape again was that guy dying in the suit on the
moon's surface at the end of Flight Path, the module crash in Dalotek
Affair, and that guy shooting the alien at the end of Survival.

I remember when Space 1999 came on a few years later as the replacement.
I liked the show, but it just didn't do it for me like UFO had.

Now, as an adult, UFO seems a bit more awkward and childish at times,
but it still retains it's title as my favorite television series of all
time.

I DID have one childhood image from UFO that stuck
with me even to today. From, I think, ESP, when the
alien ship crashes into that big house. I saw that as
a kid, and it was so realistic to me, it was ingrained
into my young mind. When I finally saw the episode
again, I still loved that scene. Gave me chills to
remember it.

It did take me a couple of tries to get into UFO. I
got the old BBC Video tapes (the 4 volumes) which
started with Exposed. It's a fairly good opening
episode to choose, but it was deathly slow.
Identified, which I saw years later, was a much better
opening and I had wished I started there. I would have
been more exicted at the outset.

1999 was less "cheesy" with the music and costumes
(purple wigs and comedic electronic music when Freeman
gapes at a girl's ass still make me snicker), even
though 1999 had those damned bell-bottoms. 1999 had a
more consistant tone than UFO, but yes, UFO had a much
darker streak of tragedy running through it. Bad
things happened to good people and vice versa. It was
more adult than 1999 (esp. 1999's second year), but it
is more firmly rooted in it's era than 1999 (again,
bell-bottoms notwithstanding).

They are such different shows and I love 'em both.

Yes, it's very quiet here lately... I've been rather quiet since I've
had the flu for the past week -- today is the first day that my
temperature has returned to normal!

Perhaps it's time to move onto our next episode in our UFO episode
discussions. Anyone have any comments they'd like to make about
DESTRUCTION? A possible theory on while the Aliens would want to
wipe out their source of human bodies?

I always assumed that, since it was nerve gas or nerve toxin or something
being dumped, that it would kill off humanity while still leaving enough of
their organs etc viable for transplant, so the aliens would just need a big
enough freezer to take 'em all home in.

I always assumed that it was written by someone without a full
grasp of the actual premise of the series, and who basically
turned it to a simple aliens vs Earth death match for this one,
unfortunate episode.

Yes, I knew that really... :)

Philip Madoc is a very good actor. Actually, thinking about it, I suppose
there is no reason why Mary's new partner (Rutland) could not have really
been the captain of the ship (his name is not used on the Ship). Maybe, that
could bring a little synchronicity into the UFO plot.

Well, I presume Ed and Mary got divorced - well, that was the respectable
thing to do in the seventies (UFO eighties), and Rutland was the new man on
Mary's scene.

Interestingly, Rutland is actually mentioned in the script of Confetti-Check
as being at Straker and Mary's wedding! Suspicious. And certainly if you
read Chris Bentley's character sketches on the Carlton DVD he states that
Mary married a Royal Navy Captain. On the collector postcards and episode
guides he always lists Philip Madoc's character in Question of Priorities as
'Stephen Rutland', since Stephen is the name Sherringham uses when talking
to the captain.

Yes, but do you think that's what the original writers intended back
when the series was made? I think they were supposed to be two
different people...

Yes, if you look at 'Destruction' in its own UFO universe it makes sense out

I'm with James on this eps - I think the writer must have been someone who
wasn't well enough versed in UFO lore to write it. The question is: why did
GA and Reg Hill go ahead and produce it for broadcast if it deviated so
vitally from the show's original premise? Sloppy, I'd say! Pam
