OT: Prime Directive

Ookla Mok

Hey folks,

Yes, the Prime Directive was a good idea. But it was often cast to the wind
in order to make a point, i.e. totalitarianism is wrong, war is wrong,
paradise is wrong, interference with other cultures is wrong(!), etc.

By the 3rd season of TOS it wasn't even brought up. Since I was not a big
fan of TNG, did the pattern continue (throw out the PD to make a point in a
story)?

David Gerrold does a better job explaining this in his book "The World of
Star Trek."

Straker & Co. had no such restraints: "Shoot first and ask questions later!"

Re: OT: Prime Directive

Pam McCaughey-2
Hi Ookla and folks:

As far as I can recall, the PD gets discussed in TNG, DS9 and possibly in
Voyager (I rarely watched Voyager and I HATE Enterprise.....). If Kirk was
to come back in time and discover the earth being theatened by the UFO
aliens, he would probably blast them into atoms and let the PD go by the
wayside as you suggested. The PD is a politically correct idea which the
various captains of the Enterprise only invoked if it shored up their own
POVs I think.

However, that having been said, I have written a TOS story (which will
appear soon on Denise Felt's web site: www.poeticlicence.com) which takes
place 6 months after Patterns of Force, in which a group of Federation
diplomats goes to hammer out a peace treaty between the Ekosians (the Nazis)
and the Zeons. The reason the Feds push for peace is because John Gill, a
Federation researcher and historian, put the Ekosians on the road to Nazism
himself and they felt duty bound to right a wrong done by one of their own.
The Ekosians would probably have never developed a Nazi style totalitatian
gov't without "help" from outside.

Going back to UFO, I don't think Straker would disagree with the PD, but he
may be more Picard like in his onw POV.

<<I HATE Enterprise>>

Why? I'm just curious. I'm not a Trekkie or Trekker
but my wife is. She watches it religiously. I'm just
amazed of the stagnation of the entire ST genre.

I get the picture Pam, but I am always amazed how far
ST has gotten away from its basis as an 'adult science
fiction series.' I mean, no one every dies in
ENTERPRISE. In TOS, you could expect casualties just
about every episode. But now, everything is resolved,
usually in the last five minutes, and off screen to
boot! And there seems to be some obligation to all the
characters to have "their" own episode. And I'm so
tired of "who is kissing who" teasing and when are we
going to see so-and-so in their underwear or naked.
Finally...and I'm REALLY going to put my foot in it
now, but they constantly bring up the Middle East
conflicts in story lines and I'm sick of it.

And I guess, as a follow up, that's why I like UFO so
much. It's very serious and nearly everyone who comes
in contact with UFO and UFO technology usually dies by
episode end.

Can we move on from "Star Trek" and "Enterprise" back to "UFO"? I
don't want Marc wondering what happened to his UFO forum while he was
away...

Thanks!!

Heh, heh... I'm back!

Usually, I just delete all messages that are 100% about STAR TREK... :-)

Thanks Bill for watching after SHADO while I was away!

Now, what's this about UFO Preview Card sets? Are these different
than the first 2 UFO Preview Cards sets that I already have? And how
many preview sets does it take before they release THE REAL SET????

And Adrian, thanks for that photo of Ayshea! Is that a real photo
from the set of UFO, or a computer generated composite? And if it's
a real photo, where'd you get it? I've never seen this photo
before...

Marc:

If you have the one from this year's Memorabilia Show, then you have this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2186462709&category=3737

Please note I have NO connection with the above eBay auction -- I am simply
using it for the picture that is posted. :)

If you have this set Marc, can you tell us what's on the back?

Not sure how many more Previews till the real thing....but let's hope not too
many more. :)

I don't have this set, but I am getting rather concerned that Cards,
Inc. has no intention of releasing a UFO card set, and just stringing
us along with preview sets year after year.... :-(

Hi Marc

Yes, it is a real photograph. I got it from S. & P. Parker some time
ago. It was a 6" x 4" and the only one they had of Ayshea.
Unfortunately I believe they have now deleted it although you could
always try their website as they have said that photos they have
removed from the catalogue are available there

Okay, thanks for that information!

You say it was a 6 by 4" photo, yet the scan is over twice as
tall as it is wide. Does your scan crop off some SHADO computer
consoles on the side?

Marc (who'd be interested in seeing the whole picture)

Re: Ayshea Photo

Hi Marc

No, the scan was of the 6" x 4" photo. However I trimmed some off the
top and side which only showed background, i.e. the computer,
afterwards. All of Ayshea which was in the photo was scanned.

Cheers

Derren Nesbitt

Lesley
I went to see 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray' with Derren Nesbitt on Thursday.
I really enjoyed it and Derren was very good in it. Afterwards I waited
with friends who wanted to get some autographs so when Derren came out I
decided to get my programme signed. Mr Nesbitt was lovely to talk to - I
told him it had been lovely to see him perform live and that he was in one
of my favourite UFO episodes. He smiled when I mentioned UFO and said he
had enjoyed doing it. I asked him to tell me something about Vladek Sheybal
as I am a huge fan and he said Vladek was a delight to work with, very
professional and a lovely person. The conversation with Derren made my
day - he was very friendly and chatty.

Cheers,
Lesleyxx

I went to see Derren Nesbit in a play in 1984 - I can't remember
the name, but it was a whodunit detective type thing. I remember
that he was very good, but I'll always remember him best for his
portrayal of the Luger-toting SS Major in 'Where Eagles Dare' - "sit
DOWWWWN, Colonel!"

Hope it comes out on DVD someday.

Looks like you have to wait at least 2 more days, at least here in the
US. I thought there was mention of a Clint Eastwood set coming out,
with it being one of the films. And it looks like you can get it
separately.
