Hi all,
There's been an increase in the number of "cute one-liners" on the list lately, so I'd like to make my semi-regular reminder that I'd like to discourage this as much as possible -- there are over 200 people subscribed to this list, and I think the majority of them would like to see some nice, substantial discussions about UFO, not watch a few people tossing back-and-forth one liners like they're in a chat room. So if this sort of thing keeps up, I'll have to switch the entire list to moderated mode, and then these sorts of posts won't be allowed. But of course, I don't really want to do this, as I'd much rather spend my very limited amount of time getting around to uploading all those juicy new UFO photos that Joe Occhiuto has sent mee... -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] P.S. On the positive side, at least we're not having nasty arguments and personal attacks like the SPACE:1999 and ITC_DVD lists currently are! |

However, being, by self confession, one of the guilty party in the chatter department, I would like to offer (firstly) my apologies for any offence caused and (secondly) the following "in defence" so to speak... I am a self confessed 60's - 80's sci-fi junkie. I have been a lifelong addict of WHO, (a programme I was weaned on) and a twenty year devotee of Blakes 7. I have nigh on every video of the pair of them and have been to several cons as well as being a full member of Horizon. Also along the way, I got into Lost in Space (NOT the dreadful film, I'm talking the original with Bill Mumy) I'm also a bit of a Trekkie - but only as far as the original series with Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc are concerned. As far as Gerry Anderson is concerned; I grew up with Thunderbirds and Stingray and have still got the original 45 rpm theme tunes of both on vinyl as treasured possessions. I desperately tried to get into Space 1999 but in the end that naff 1940's Errol Flynn movie type soft screen focus on the female "heroine" got on my nerves in the end... but that's all another genre and none of it belongs on this list, I know. Getting to UFO. Well - sadly, this is one of the programmes that I instantly adored on it's original airing, but have only just rediscovered after many years absence. I'll be honest here, I'm not a great fan of modern TV programmes in general - most of my viewing time is spent on what I personally consider was the finer era of television, and so I tend to flick about, sometimes aimlessly, on sky looking for something worthwhile to watch. This was how I came across the current UFO screenings on the UK SKY Sci-fi channel and rekindled a VERY long lost passion for this wonderfully evocative programme. Nobody (but perhaps YOU all can) would believe how thrilled and relieved I was when I came across Marc's incredible site and subsequently, the quite remarkable Italian ISOSHADO site too. It was marvellously comforting to know that there were SO many people, from all around the world who also loved this long lost programme. But then Sky pulled the plug. Ok - not for good, but nevertheless, I only got to see 4 episodes - none of which have been on the "discuss" agenda since I joined SHADO. Sheila from the list is very kindly donating me her "spare" episodes on video to give me a chance to catch up a bit. But I can't help thinking there must be others like me on here - who maybe can't afford right now to give our credit cards a pounding & buy the series outright on commercial video and so must rely on whatever Sky or our trusty friends can supply us? I can understand and fully sympathise with the frustration "one liners" cause to UFO die-hards, but it is extremely difficult to do much else if, like me, you are very eager to join in a discussion but are still in the "infancy" of the programmes screenings. I would therefore, (extremely respectfully!!!) point out that if slightly more widespread topics of debate that could include ALL list members, regardless of level of episode knowledge could be thrown into "the arena" (for example individual character assassinations, set design, props, and overviews of the viability of an organisation like SHADO in real life 1980's etc.,) then this might go a long way towards encouraging the level of "useful discussion" desired... severely on the knuckles for not waiting the proper time to ask) but this is one of the only four stories I have on video and this niggle is driving me absolutely nuts EVERY time I see it, so I hope someone can put me out of my misery....... In ESP - why does there, at no point, seem to be any possibility mooted of Skydiver One being launched to intercept the UFO in the earth's atmosphere and therefore WAY before it hits the house? Di |

He does have a bumpy complexion but I think he's kind of grown into it by now .. it helps to give him that amiable 'lived in' look :) By the way I had the same mail from Mike Billington that a few other listers have referred to, in which he refers to the upcoming ECLECTIC 21 event as "the first time Ed and myself made a personal appearance together in Europe since U.F.O" - however I don't think that's true - a friend of mine from school, who was also a fan of UFO at the time, attended some event at which MB & Ed Bishop appeared in the seventies. I remember him telling me about it during a Physics class, in either my fourth or fifth year at grammar school, probably 1974 or 1975. Interestingly, my friend was wearing a very loud and colourful shirt in somewhat dubious taste, and Ed specifically complimented him on it. |

Funnily enough, I have a very good friend in NZ who has to get up religiously in the very early hours to tape UFO because the timer on his VCR is broken, poor lad. He's keen as mustard on the series too so good on you guys!! In any case the "velcro" material is invented and produced in 1941. I find this information from: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1999/century/episodes/04/ VELCRO 1941 One day, after taking a walk in the woods with his dog, Swiss inventor George de Mestral discovered that both his pet and his pants were covered with burrs. Curious about the seed pods' sticking qualities, de Mestral examined the burrs under a microscope. He discovered that the burrs had small hooks that tangled themselves on loops found in fur or cloth. He then decided to copy nature's design -- and create a two-sided fastening device. The result was called Velcro, taken from the two words "velour" and "crochet." -- Angelo Finamore -- |

Just go watch the scene when Ed and Alec are preparing to search Foster's flat for listening devices in Court Martial. Ed rips open his jacket when he is getting down to business. Point to note here. You never see any of the characters do their nehru jackets up do you. Because velcro is very fiddly to get done up and get it just right, I guess. Sheila "A dEdicatEd Ed Strakerite" |

Velcro was invented in 1957 by Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral, who also devised the name from the French words velours and croche'. His inspiration came from the way cockleburs stuck to his clothes while hiking in the mountains. Very nice story and it seems to be true. Harald |

I would prefer the ordinary public space exploration to continue. And public contact with the aliens, to learn what is going on out there. I can't imagine that civilization would break down merely because we find out that there is someone out there. There might well be a long massive public excitement and sensation and spaced-out-ness, but it would settle down.
