UFO Cartoon No.18

The cartoon for this week is Identified II.
Weeks after it was drawn and before it was presented,
the subject matter was coincidentally discussed by
several SHADO members.
I did not know if I should use it or not, and put it
aside for a while. But since it was drawn before
the discussion and they take so long to do, I have
decided to go ahead.

Recieved the new Japan UFO book today -ordered via amazon.co.jp, it is really a great little book. To all intents and purposes it is a
updated version of the Took Mook guide [not sure that is right title as I don't have my copy to hand] that appeared in 1990.

207 pages handbook sized crammed with photo's [ I mean crammed !!] some in colour - The book majors of the model kits and
merchandise [listed in chronogical order it appeared from 1970]. It even reproduces the instructions and art from the various Bandai
and Imai kits, even the real rare ones like the Lunar Carrier [I have never seen the instructions for the Bandai Lunar Carrier before !],
UFO and the various Moonbase kits - it is amazing how much UFO related merchandise has been made available in the 2-3 years and
it underlines the renaissance UFO has had recently. It also contains some nice engineering styled isometric drawings, and sketches
of some of the craft - it includes a nice conjectural box art sketch for an Airfix produced Interceptor - if only !!! Definatley great for
model makers. Lot's of Japanese text as you would expect - I have no idea what has been written !!! :-)

It does contains stills and publicity shots from the series most have been seen before there are a few that are not familar to me at
least.

It is bang up to date and includes merchandise produced to this year Konami models and DVD's, and even gives a track list and cover
image for the CD of the so-called Japanese "Original Soundtrack" CD [thier words, not mine I hasten add] both discs apparently clock
in at circa 38 mins but still manages to cram in 82 tracks [so I'm guessing some tracks could be quite short !! and just what is the
Thunderbirds anthem ???] - it would appear the producers of the CD have not made best use of a running time of CD's. Despite not
being able to read the copy it is a great little book.

I agree it's a nice little book, although I don't think it's as good
as the old Town Mook (which had a lot more color photographs and is
in a larger format). It is of course a lot more up-to-date!

The Japanese CD is simply a re-recorded version of a fan-produced
CD that was offered on this mailing list 6 years ago, and has been
seen in various incarnations on eBay ever since. That CD had ~80
tracks, but were the original Barry Gray recordings. Obviously
someone in Japan had this CD, and decided to record this music
(and nothing more). I think it's too bad that they didn't try
to record the music that no longer appears to be available in any
form (e.g., the drum solo at the beginning of IDENTIFIED, and the
first half of THE LONG SLEEP). Also, at the time this CD was
produced, the 2-disc Fanderson CD was available, so they would
have been better off basing it off of that!

As for the Thunderbirds anthem, the standard Thunderbirds March
can be heard in the Japanese dubbed version of UFO during the
Moonbase Interceptor launches!

Heh, heh... we actually haven't discussed any episodes since early
November, so I think it might be time to move onto the next episode....

And the next episode is... TIMELASH!

Anyone got anything to say about TIMELASH? Perhaps some script
inconsistencies here and there? For example, if it was night outside of
the studios and daytime at the studios, when time "unfroze" at the
studios shouldn't it suddenly become night? Or is SHADO simply a few
hours behind the rest of the world from now on?

Or what about the time freeze not affecting things "not in motion"? How
do they defined "not in motion", since technically *everything* is in
motion, since the Earth is in motion.

And of course, as revealed in "The Complete Book of UFO", MINDBENDER was
filmed prior to TIMELASH, and Ed Bishop hurt his ankle during the filming
of the cowboy scene in MINDBENDER. Which makes me wonder -- was he doing
all that running around in TIMELASH with a bad ankle?

Yes, I was wondering that the other day. Something is wrong with the
timeline, the dates as well. I understand filming was stopped for 6 weeks
while Ed's ankle repaired...

I can personally vouch for the fact that it would be impossible to run
around like Ed did in Timelash, just 6 weeks after breaking ones ankle...
maybe he had a stand in (ho ho) but it certainly looks like Ed?

Ollie Reed's cousin, eh? That IS interesting.

One of my favorite episodes of UFO, if not THE
favorite. Two scenes have always stayed with me since
I originally saw it in the 70s:

1) the smashing of the 2-by-4 on the frozen suspended
chair by Ed Straker

and

2) the close-up of Ed's face as he tries to focus and
aims the rifle at the incoming UFO.

It seemed much more intense when I first saw it; it
just solidified the character of Straker in my mind as
the most determined hero on TV.

Then, I think that was followed the next week by THE
LONG SLEEP...and UFO was gone.

Here's something I saw last time I watched Timelash - at the start of the episode, when Straker is being chased through the studios by the security men, they pass Turner, who is dead, going round in circles in his go kart. Later in the episode, when Straker shoots Turner, Turner's go kart is going round in circles, but in the opposite direction!

I love this episode but in recent years I have found things that bug
me more and more. Most of the science - things in motion (what about
light??) and all that can be ignored for the most part.

Shado is a secret organization and yet a UFO has found it and has
used a temporal weapon in order to attack. I would think that the
aliens now know where the Shado headquarters are and throw everything
they got at them. Other episodes also support the fact that the
aliens know of the base and yet they don't seem to want to take it
out any time soon.

Timelash is one of my favorite episodes.
I noticed a couple of bloopers:
1) when Straker & Lake approach two frozen guys who were loading a kart
(can't remember precisely), a sort of truck/vehicle passes quickly by in the
landscape, from left to right, beyond a grass field
2) when Straker is chasing Turner during the "orange cars race" among the
Pinewood wide corridors, a man steps in in the far corridor opening (first
time I noticed this was on a videotape; I find it harder to notice it when I
watch the episode on DVD).

If time has stopped, then *everything* is stopped, including liquids,
gasses, water and air.
Even if YOU were exempt and not frozen, imagine trying to move, or even
breath in this environment. It would be like being encased in solid acrylic,
with that acrylic filling your lungs....

If time is frozen, then light and radiation doesn't travel either, does
that mean you cannot see?

Hi folks,
Just watched "Timeslip" and found it just "ok". I'm not really into the
physics of it all, but Straker clamed the only things frozen were things in
motion at the time of the "event" - hence the smoke from the workman's
cigarette and the chair in midair. I actually prefer the episodes with a bit
more "action". I love the SHADO machines, and UFO isn't UFO to me without at
least an Interceptor, Skydiver or Mobile!
I also watched The Long Sleep, and although there is little (none!)
machinery in that, I found it a more enjoyable story.
I guess that is one of the great things about the show - it has something to
appeal to everyone.
